Meet the Deans . . .
Dean of the College, Scott Bierman, is also Professor of Economics. The Dean oversees the academic programs of the College. He is responsible for faculty recruitment, review, and promotion as well as the review of the academic departments and programs. The Dean is Chair of the Budget, Education and Curriculum, Faculty Curricular Planning, Faculty Personnel, and Faculty Grants Committees, and a member of College Council.
Associate Dean of the College, Elizabeth Ciner, oversees the offices of Off Campus Studies, Registrar, and the College Writing Program. Dean Ciner is the liaison between students and opportunities for internal fellowships and scholarships, fellowships and prizes. Responsibilities include academic advising, dishonesty cases, language, RAD, and writing requirements. As a standing member of both the college’s Education and Curriculum Committee (ECC) and Academic Standing Committee (ASC), she has been deeply involved in the assessment of academic programs and in students’ academic progress.
Associate Dean of the College, Beverly Nagel, is also the Winifred and Atherton Bean Professor of Sociology, Science, Technology, and Society. Dean Nagel oversees the Animal Care Facility, Archives, Art Gallery and Collections, the Language Center, and Science Education Resource Center (SERC). She sits on the Budget Committee, Buildings and Budgets Committee, Library Committee, Advisory Committee for Academic Computing, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Institutional Review Board for Research on Human Subjects.
Associate Dean of the College, Éva Pósfay, is also a professor of French. Dean Pósfay is coordinator of the accreditation self-study, oversees the offices of Summer Academic Programs, the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, the Arboretum Committee, and is secretary of the Diversity Initiative Group. Responsibilities include hiring a talented and diverse faculty, creating faculty development opportunities, inter-department endowments, faculty grants, new faculty orientation, the Headley House Distinguished Visitor Program, the POSSE Program, and faculty office assignments.
Vice President for Student Development/Dean of Students, Hudlin Wagner, oversees the Division of Student Life consisting of the Dean of Students Office and Class Deans, Academic Support Center, Acting in the Community Together (ACT), Campus Activities Office, Career Center, Gender & Sexuality Center, Office of Intercultural Life, TRIO/Student Support Services, Residential Life, The Wellness Center and Dacie Moses House program. The Dean of Students is available to all students and groups for advice and counsel; is a sexual harassment/assault adjudicator; oversees all student life programs and services; and is responsible for development and implementation of all student life policies. The VP/DOS is a member of the Administrative Council (the President's administrative Cabinet), College Council, the Board of Trustees Student Life Committee; the Diversity Initiative Group (DIG); the Capital Funding and Priorities Committee (CF&PC), Strategic Housing and Dining services. She represents the College on CHAS (Consortium on High Achievement and Success) and AAUW. Division departmental reports: Office of Intercultural Life, Residential Life. Senior Associate Dean of Students, Bruce Colwell, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the senior class students and is the acting sophomore students Class Dean for the 2008-2009 academic year. He is a member of several committees including the Academic Standing subcommittee, Community Advisory Committee, Student Life Assessment committee and the Technology Planning & Priorities Committee. He is an administrative liaison for the Parents Advisory Council, Student Life Committee. He is involved with sexual harassment and assault investigations. Associate Dean of Students, Joseph Baggot, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the first-year (frosh) students. Dean Baggot is a member of several committees including the First Year Student Experience Task Force, One In Four (Sexual Violence Prevention - men’s group), Academic Standing Committee and Subcommittee – Chair (which oversees status changes, including leaves, withdrawals, and re-admissions); DIG/Campus Climate Survey, Education and Curriculum Committee, Student Life Administrative Rep to CSA; and is involved with sexual harassment and assault investigations. Associate Dean of Students, Cathy Carlson, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the junior class students and is the Director of The Wellness Center. The Wellness Center services include: General Medical Care – Family Nurse Practitioner and Certified Advanced Practice Nurse; Counseling and Clinical Psychologists, Academic Accommodation and Disability Services for students, and Student Wellness Advisors (SWAs). Dean Carlson is a member of several committees including the Academic Standing Subcommittee, Sexual Violence Review Team – Not on Our Campus, Peer Leader Planning Group, and the Student Life Division Assessment Committee. Associate Dean of Admissions and Director of Student Financial Services, Rodney Oto, primarily oversees the Student Financial Services Office and the financial aid budget. His is also a senior member of the admissions staff. He and his staff are available to respond to questions and concerns about the cost of attending Carleton, how to apply for assistance, calculating a family's contribution to pay for expenses, different types of aid available, off-campus study assistance, and eligibility for federal and state sources of aid. He is responsible for the development of the aid budget and the implementation and adherence to it. He will also review appeals and decide any exceptions to current aid policies and procedures.
Registrar, Roger Lasley, is responsible for all academic records. He and his staff in the Registrar's Office are available to answer students' questions and concerns about academic regulations and procedures, including transfer of credit, major declaration, course registration, enrollment verifications, and progress toward the degree.
