Meet the Deans . . .

Dean of the College, Beverly Nagel, is also the Winifred and Atherton Bean Professor of Sociology, Science, Technology, and Society. The Dean oversees the academic programs of the College. She is responsible for faculty recruitment, review, and promotion as well as the review of academic departments and programs. The Dean is Chair of the Budget, Education and Curriculum, Faculty Curricular Planning, Faculty Personnel, and Faculty Grants Committees, and a member of College Council.

Associate Dean of the College, Elizabeth Ciner, oversees the offices of Off Campus Studies, Registrar, the College Writing Program, and Pre-Health Professionals Advising. Dean Ciner is the liaison between students and opportunities for internal fellowships and scholarships, fellowships and prizes. Responsibilities include academic advising, academic honesty cases, language exemptions, Recognition and Affirmation of Differences (RAD) requirement, and writing requirement. As a standing member of both the college’s Education and Curriculum Committee (ECC) and Academic Standing Committee (ASC), she has been deeply involved in academic policy, in institutional assessment of academic programs and in students’ academic progress, and oversees several institutional assessment initiatives.

Associate Dean of the College, Nathan Grawe, is also an associate professor of Economics. Dean Grawe oversees the Animal Care Facility, Archives, Art Gallery and Collections, the Language Center, and Science Education Resource Center (SERC). He sits on the Budget Committee, Capital Finance and Planning Committee (CF&PC), Library Committee, Advisory Committee for Academic Computing, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (non-voting), and the Institutional Review Board for Research on Human Subjects.

Associate Dean of the College, Éva Pósfay, is also a professor of French. Dean Pósfay works with departments in hiring non-tenure-track faculty and is involved with initiatives such as diversity hiring and the Posse program. She is responsible for new faculty orientation, junior faculty mentoring (with the LTC), and faculty development. She oversees the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, the Cowling Arboretum, the Headley House Distinguished Visitors Program, Academic Civic Engagement (ACE), Ethics at Carleton (EthIC), and Summer Academic Programs. Additional responsibilities include interdepartmental endowments (Chesley lecture series), publication of the East Laird Times, faculty office assignments, and student academic concerns. She coordinated the 2009 accreditation self-study.

Vice President for Student Development/Dean of Students, Hudlin Wagner, oversees the Division of Student Life consisting of the Dean of Students Office and Class Deans, Academic Support Center, Acting in the Community Together (ACT), Campus Activities Office, Career Center, Gender & Sexuality Center, Office of Intercultural Life, TRIO/Student Support Services, Residential Life, The Wellness Center and Dacie Moses House program. The Dean of Students is available to all students and groups for advice and counsel; is a sexual harassment/assault adjudicator; oversees all student life programs and services; and is responsible for development and implementation of all student life policies. The VP/DOS is a member of the Administrative Council (the President's administrative Cabinet), College Council, the Board of Trustees Student Life Committee; the Diversity Initiative Group (DIG); the Capital Funding and Priorities Committee (CF&PC), Strategic Housing and Dining services. She represents the College on CHAS (Consortium on High Achievement and Success) and AAUW. Division departmental reports: Office of Intercultural Life, Residential Life. Associate Dean of Students, Joseph Baggot, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the first-year students and has oversight of the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC), Acting in the Community Together (ACT), and TRIO Student Support Services in the Division of Student Life. Joe joined the Carleton staff in 2005. He is the coordinator of the Academic Standing Committee and a member of the Education and Curriculum Committee (ECC). Joe is involved with student-related sexual misconduct investigations as well as more serious student conduct issues involving first-year students.

Associate Dean of Students, Cathy Carlson, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the junior and senior class students and has oversight of The Wellness Center and Academic Support Center within the Division of Student Life. Cathy joined the Carleton staff in 1993. She is the administrative liaison for the Parents Advisory Council, serves on the Academic Standing Committee, and is a member of the Pandemic Planning Committee. Cathy is the adviser to Mortar Board and is involved with student-related sexual misconduct investigations as well as more serious student conduct issues involving juniors and seniors. Associate Dean of Students, Julie Thornton, is the Class Dean and Adviser to the sophomore class students and has oversight of the Residential Life and Campus Activities Office within the Division of Student Life. Julie joined the Carleton staff in January of 2009. Campus-wide, Julie chairs the sub-committee on learning outside the classroom as part of the Community Equity and Diversity Initiative (CEDI). She is a member of the Assessment Committee, the Capital Funding and Priorities Committee, and serves on the Academic Standing Committee. Julie is the administrative adviser to the Carleton Student Association (CSA) and is involved with student-related sexual misconduct investigations as well as more serious student conduct issues involving sophomores. Associate Dean of Admissions and Director of Student Financial Services, Rodney Oto, primarily oversees the Student Financial Services Office and the financial aid budget. His is also a senior member of the admissions staff. He and his staff are available to respond to questions and concerns about the cost of attending Carleton, how to apply for assistance, calculating a family's contribution to pay for expenses, different types of aid available, off-campus study assistance, and eligibility for federal and state sources of aid. He is responsible for the development of the aid budget and the implementation and adherence to it. He will also review appeals and decide any exceptions to current aid policies and procedures.

Registrar, Roger Lasley, is responsible for all academic records. He and his staff in the Registrar's Office are available to answer students' questions and concerns about academic regulations and procedures, including transfer of credit, major declaration, course registration, enrollment verifications, and progress toward the degree.
