Disability Services for Students

DISABILITY SERVICES FOR STUDENTS

Under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans for Disabilities Act of 1990, all institutions of higher education must respond appropriately to the unique needs of disabled students. These federal laws are designed to ensure that disabled students do not experience academic inequity. More particularly, they require institutions to examine, on a case-by-case basis, requests made by disabled students for reasonable accommodation. While "fundamental alteration to the nature of a program" is not required, reasonable accommodations are.

It is the policy of Carleton College to create and maintain an environment in which all students may learn and work to their fullest potential, limited to the least extent possible by individual disabilities. To ensure the provision of reasonable and appropriate services and accommodations, students requesting these must provide current documentation of their disability. Final determination of reasonable accommodations is made by Anne Lamppa, Coordinator of Disability Services for Students, Wellness Center.

The Coordinator of Disability Services ensures that accommodations and responsibilities are clearly articulated, understood, and will maintain an open process actively involving the student and faculty. Faculty will receive verification of academic accommodations and assistance with the provision of appropriate accommodations. The Disability Services for Students Handbook regarding policies and procedures is available on-line through the Wellness Center. Questions should be directed to the Coordinator of Disability Services, Anne Lamppa (x4464), Dean of Students, Hudlin Wagner (x4248), or Associate Dean of the College, Elizabeth Ciner (x4300).
