Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

INSTITUTIONAL ANIMAL CARE AND USE COMMITTEE

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing all activities involving animals at Carleton. As mandated by federal law, the committee must review and approve all research and teaching activities involving animals, to ascertain that these activities meet ethical standards for humane animal care and use, and accord with the standards set out by the NIH and USDA. The IACUC ensures the humane care of animals through the semiannual inspection of animal housing and research facilities, the review of all animal care programs and animal usage protocols, and investigation of any complaints made regarding animal care or use. Instructions for submitting an application to house or use animals at Carleton are available on the Dean of the College web page through the IACUC link. Applications must be approved by the IACUC before housing animals or undertaking any research or teaching activity with animals. The approval process typically takes two weeks, but may take much longer if a full committee review is required.
