Retirement
RETIREMENT
Many faculty like the idea of a phased retirement – teaching part-time for a few years before retiring completely. Interested faculty should discuss this option with the Dean (see the Faculty Handbook for more details). Please note that faculty who will be under age 65 at the end of the phased retirement period may choose to continue on the College medical insurance plan until age 65. In this case, the college pays 50% of the premium coverage and the faculty member pays 50%. Faculty interested in retiring before “normal” age should also see the Dean.
Be sure to check with retired faculty members to see if they would like to remain involved in departmental events. The Dean’s office sends a mailing to retiring and retired faculty every summer asking them whether they wish to remain listed in the web directory and what types of College events and mailings they wish to receive. Many retired faculty remain in Northfield, like to remain active and involved, and can be good resources in a number of ways for faculty and students.
You should be aware of many privileges that continue after retirement:
- Faculty who have signed a commitment to retire may teach one special “culminating” course (to be negotiated with the Dean). This may be a special topics course within the faculty member’s department or program, or may be an interdisciplinary or team-taught course.
- In consultation with the Dean, unused PDA funds may be rolled over for research support post-retirement. In addition, retired faculty may apply for modest research support through the Dean’s office.
- Library privileges (for Northfield residents) continue – retirees can borrow books for a year; request interlibrary loans, use computer searches (unless they are very extensive), and sign up for a book locker.
- Upon request, retired faculty may keep their e-mail and computing accounts.
- Campus updates and information about campus events - retired faculty select the types of updates and invitations they would like to receive (e.g. Carleton Weekly and invitation to employee recognition).
- Recreation facilities and access to campus events.
- Auditing classes – if there isn’t a waiting list; check with the instructor.
- College identification card - by calling Campus Services for an appointment to get a photo taken.
- Bookstore discount – by identifying oneself as a retired faculty member.
- Campus voice mailbox, available upon request.
Faculty retirements are an occasion for the campus to celebrate a faculty member’s career and we encourage celebratory events to honor those who have served the college. The Dean’s Office will contribute up to $500 from the Dean’s discretionary funds for an event honoring a retiring faculty member. If your department would like to invite a speaker or a number of speakers for public events related to a colleague’s retirement, please contact Arjendu Pattanayak, who oversees the Visiting Scholars Fund. Events of this type should be instead of and not in addition to other regularly scheduled department events. PLEASE NOTE: Faculty who are retiring are invited to a dinner with the Trustees in May. Please avoid the Trustee meeting dates when planning your celebration.
The Dean’s Office will also contribute up to $500 to help defray the costs of moving books and other materials from a retiring faculty member’s office to their home or other location. Please contact Danette DeMann to make arrangements for reimbursement.
