East Laird Times

The East Laird Times is distributed electronically to the faculty by the Dean of the College Office. It is published bi-monthly during the academic terms, and on an occasional basis during breaks. You may submit articles for the ELT to Charlene Hamblin by using the ELT Submission Form. Staff who wish to be added to the ELT mailing list may contact Peggy Pfister at x4303.

    • Final Edition of the East Laird Times

      Today is our final edition of the East Laird Times.  Beginning next week, a new newsletter, Carleton Weekly, will replace both Currently@Carleton and The East Laird TimesCarleton Weekly will be distributed to all faculty and staff (and retirees who wish to receive it) and will continue to include news and information for and about faculty and staff.  Please continue to send us news of your professional engagements.  Submissions should be sent to http://go.carleton.edu/weeklysub, or you can find a link to the submission form from the Dean of the College Web site.

    • Staff Changes in the Dean of the College Office

      Charlene Hamblin has accepted new responsibilities during the academic year as Administrative Assistant to the Coordinator of the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching and as Headley House Coordinator.  In the summer months, she will serve as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Summer Academic Programs along with her Headley House duties.  You can find Charlene in Willis 213 or at x4192.  Becky Krogh has moved into Charlene’s previous position supporting Associate Dean Éva Pósfay and Danette DeMann will provide support for Associate Dean Nathan Grawe.

    • Disruption in Great Space on Tuesday, September 8

      Please note that the Snack Bar will be closed on the morning of Tuesday, September 8. As it has been in the past, the Faculty Retreat will be held in Sayles-Hill Great Space until about 10:30 a.m. The Bookstore will, however, remain open and can be accessed through the downstairs entrance. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

    • Donald Schier Dedication

      Donald Schier, recently deceased Mellon Professor of the Humanities, had the Summer 2009 number of the Sewanee Review dedicated to him. The dedication reads: "This issue of the Sewanee Review is dedicated to the memory of Donald S. Schier (1914-2009), teacher, scholar and critic, a valued contributor since 1981."

    • Trish Ferrett

      Professor of Chemistry, Co-Director of the Carleton Interdisciplinary Science Initiative (CISMI), and Senior Research Fellow at SERC, designed and participated in a faculty workshop at Carleton in June funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The workshop is the first of several in 2009-10 involving a small cohort of nine faculty from five colleges who are doing scholarly classroom inquiry into interdisciplinary science learning. The workshop was facilitated by Whitney Schlegel of Indiana University, Professor of Biology and Director of Human Biology.

    • Michael Flynn

      Professor of Linguistics, recently gave two talks "Ideogram and Morpheme in Kanji" at Kyoto University and "Kanji from a Linguistic Point of View" at Chuo University.

    • Alex Freeman

      Assistant Professor of Music, will have his Sonata for Piano (2000) featured on an alumni recital at Wheaton College, in September. Alex's composition will be performed by Brian Lee, who recorded the work this summer, thanks to a targeted opportunity grant from Carleton, and who visited Carleton College in 2008 as part of the Christopher U. Light Lectureship in Music.

    • Alex Freeman

      Assistant Professor of Music, will have his chamber composition “Blueshift” performed by The Society for New Music in Syracuse in conjunction with Syracuse University's Syracuse Symposium celebrating light in October.  Information about the Syracuse Symposium can be found at http://syracusesymposium.org/about.html and The Society for New Music Web page: http://www.societyfornewmusic.org/concerts.cfm

    • Cherif Keïta

      Professor of French, had his films reviewed in France and South Africa. Continue reading for a complete listing of the reviews.  His film making activity in South Africa was also recognized by Durban Mayor, Mr. Obed Mlaba, during a ceremony commemorating the opening of the city's first movie theater 100 years ago.

    • Kara Lloyd

      Accounting and Purchasing Assistant, recently passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. This examination culminates years of academic study and is reflective of her commitment to bring professionalism and excellence to her accounting position here at Carleton. Please join the Business Office in congratulating Kara!

    • Neil Lutsky

      William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, gave the keynote address at Spelman College's opening faculty retreat, August 13. His talk was titled "Curricular Sudoku: Quantitative Reasoning across the Curriculum." He also served as the consultant for Spelman and Smith Colleges' collaborative workshop at Spelman, August 12, on ePortfolios and QR Assessment.

    • Midwest Faculty Seminars, 2009-2010

      The University of Chicago Center for Teaching and Learning announces dates and titles of the four 2009-2010 Midwest Faculty Seminars. Benefits of these seminars include offering faculty the opportunity to participate actively and collaboratively, with colleagues from across the disciplines, in discussions that immediately and directly address, not only matters of mutual interest, but also issues that profoundly affect teaching and learning. In doing so, the seminars afford faculty occasions for study and reflection and, also, for the sort of cross-disciplinary exchange that characterizes liberal arts education at its best.     • The Consortium on High Achievement and Success, Black and Lantino Males Conferene

      The Consortium on High Achievement and Success (CHAS), Black and Latino Males Conference, “Our Time is Now: Preparing for Leadership in the New Economy” to be held November 13-15, 2009 at Skidmore College. The conference will address leadership development and opportunities for Black and Latino males in today’s changing economy. Issues vital to the economic future of our students will be explored in discussions examining communications, immigration, healthcare, security, communications, environmental ecology and energy.
