Programs - 2002 Update
Provide more coordination and oversight of the curriculum by creating a programs and curriculum committee to advise the Dean of the College on decisions relating to the academic program.
- The Faculty Curricular Planning Committee was created in 1999.It consists of the five faculty elected to the ECC, the Dean and the Associate Dean (Liz Ciner). All requests for permission to hire tenure track (even if it’s replacing a retirement) now go to FCPC, who advise the Dean and President.
- The FCPC has participated in approving new courses and in designating the appropriate distribution group (when a faculty member requests that a course "count" in a distribution group outside of his or her department).
- The FCPC issued its first Curricular Prospectus in May 2002; the plan is to update it annually (perhaps in a streamlined format).
Reassess and perhaps restructure the curricular organization of the College, including department, interdisciplinary programs, majors, concentrations, area studies, and special majors.
- June 1999, an ECC sub-committee (chaired by sociology professor Beverly Nagel) found that interdisciplinary programs sometimes have to beg departments for faculty to teach necessary courses. This is exacerbated when departments hire leave replacements without due consideration for programs.
- Implemented a more focused consideration of the needs of interdisciplinary programs when authorizing leave replacements (this has become part of our leave replacement form).
- Moved from one-year to two-year curricular planning, providing an extended period for programs and departments to coordinate and negotiate.
- Have begun working with concentration coordinators on making concentrations more flexible.
Rejuvenate the advising system, particularly for first-year students.
- Spring 1999, an ECC sub-committee (chaired by religion professor Lewis Newman) reported on academic advising for first- and second-year students.
- The ECC sent recommendations to the faculty for a vote, Fall of 2001, to re-establish the Advisory Committee on Advising (ACA), and validating the principle that advisors would be the student’s instructor.
- Winter 2002, faculty voted to establish an ad hoc Advisory Committee on Advising, to advise Associate Dean Elizabeth Ciner about ways to streamline and improve advising.
- For Fall 2002, on the advice of the ad hoc ACA, students will be assigned advisors before arriving on campus and will have one (group) meeting with the advisor prior to registration.
- This means that the number of students advised by an instructor will drop somewhat, but we will be flexible in reassigning students to new advisors as requested.
- Examine the senior year, especially the senior integrative exercise and transition out of Carleton.
- May 1999, an ECC subcommittee on the senior year experience (chaired by Classics professor Clara Hardy) reported on the wide variety of senior integrative exercises that various departments have.
- March 2001, faculty adopted an ECC recommendation to give departments more flexibility in devising their comps. Prior to this, the maximum number of credits allowed for comps was 6; many departments were "hiding" credits.
- In addition, the deadline for the completion of comps was set earlier in Spring term, so that students would not be surprised by last mnute failures.
- Faculty also adopted a recommendation that allowed departments to request permission to receive teaching credits for comps.
- Some departments made incremental changes to comps for 2002-03.
- Several departments have made formal requests to receive teaching credit for comps; requests have been considered and arrangements ade with interested departments.
- Concerning transitioning out of Carleton, the Dean of the College office has worked collaboratively with the Dean of Students Office on nd-of-year senior activities.
-
- Following Honors Convocation, the Dean’s Office sponsors a faculty reception for seniors (this year we tried an all campus reception for seniors, but plan to return to a seniors only reception next year).
- During Senior Week, there’s a reception for seniors which we hope to get more faculty to.
