Students and Student Life - 2002 Update
Redesign some of our extracurricular programs to improve students' learning and living environment.
The Division of Student Affairs has addressed a wide range of issues-staffing, facilities, programs, and policies-over the last several years. The following is a partial list of major initiatives. Refining and funding the long-range student housing plan-both renovation and new building-is the most compelling issue before us.
- Opened the Recreation Center (April 2000), a revolutionary development in indoor recreation, health and wellness for students, faculty and staff.
- Revised student food plan ('99-'00), including vast improvements to the snack bar and its inclusion on the meal plan; brought on-line new dining hall with after-hours capacity (Jan. '01). Renovation plan for Burton/Sevy dining hall in process. Improvements include: re-configured "scatter system," more "just-in-time" cooking, expansion of dining area, complete change circulation pattern, designated station from vegetarians/vegans.
- Built new housing (opened Jan '01) and put in place a master plan for revitalizing outmoded space, "pruning" obsolete space, enhancing common areas in existing residence halls, and increasing stock of housing available to faculty and staff ('00-'01 and ongoing).
- All dorms (10) and the new townhouses have Ethernet connections (high speed Internet access); College-owned houses will be connected as time and resources allow.
- Installation of fire safety enhancements (sprinklers) in all student housing planned for 2001-2003.
- Developed more coherent student leadership program (SALT) from the existing peer leader programs; improved collaboration on peer training ('99 and ongoing).
- Re-assessed Wellness Center staffing and program, developed plan for moving TWC to the vacated Evans Dining Hall when feasible.
- Upon completion of snack bar renovation (Jan '99), developed further plans for improving Great Space, including additional storage, improved lighting, and better sound.
- Ongoing attention to Ensuring Student Success initiative (retention program) and diversity education (DIG).
- Created Center for Gender and Sexuality (combines Women's Center, LGBT advisor, and men's issues); renovated ground Scoville to create improved interaction of students and staff (Fall '02).
- Revised alcohol, sexual misconduct, and community standards policies, including substantive revisions in adjudication procedures.
- Committed to smoke-free indoor policy by Fall '05.
- Developed "Co-curricular Learning" assessment plan; incorporated it into the institutional assessment program.
