- a summer in Cambodia learning about Cambodia's oral tradition and the role it plays in Cambodian society, with particular emphasis on the role of women;
- a trek across Northern China, retracing the route Marco Polo took from Kashgar to Khanbaliq; follow-up activities included a slide show and presentation;
- an investigation, carried out in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, to figure out how the education system, parents, students, and the people of both rural and urban communities perceive the role of women and the goals of female education; follow-up included an on-campus presentation about the summer activities;
- a summer spent with Afrikaners in South Africa to experience firsthand and better understand the racial attitudes of the group; follow-up included an article in the Carleton Voice;
- a journey to Vietnam where the recipient "shadowed" several Vietnamese doctors, to better understand how the Vietnamese are bringing the health-care delivery system into the modern world. This experience was chronicled in a diary and recorded on film and audio tape for showing at Carleton;
- an exploration of Russian art and culture, especially as it is reflected in the creative work, and particularly in the folk art, of women; a study of folklore, beliefs, and traditions in Southwestern Russia;
- a trip through various cities and towns in southwestern Russia to visit women's art cooperatives to better understand how Russian art and culture is reflected in the folk art of women; or
- a personal exploration of the Spirit of the Peruvian Andes.
These topics constitute suggestions; other topics are possible. Students are urged to consult with faculty early in the process of drawing up their proposals.
