An information session will be held 7-8 pm January 11, 2010 in the Middle Eastern Languages Lounge at which two of last year's recipients, Alex Popper '10, and Eric Reich '11, will share experiences studying in Israel.

Eligibility:

• All Carleton students in good academic standing irrespective of religious affiliation or knowledge of Hebrew.
• Students who can demonstrate a genuine interest in the history, language,and culture of Israel.
• Preference will be given to applicants who are rising sophomores and juniors so that the award recipient can come back to Carleton and share his/her experiences and insights into life in Israel.

Application Process: Send three copies of the following to Jean Sherwin, Administrative Assistant, Classics Department, LDC 230.

• A letter explaining the educational experiences that have prepared you for study in Israel and the ways in which this off-campus experience will contribute to your education
• Two reference forms from faculty (also available in LDC 230)
• Student application form, including a budget (also available in LDC 230)

Note: Although a firm choice of a specific educational program is not required at the time of application, students are advised to explore study options in Israel with Professor Stacy Beckwith, Assistant Professor of Hebrew and Director of Judaic Studies, LDC 257, x7033, before applying.

Deadline: All materials must be submitted by 4 p.m. on February 19, 2010, to Jean Sherwin, Administrative Assistant, Classics Department, LDC 230.

Purpose: This fund was established by Elie Alyeshmerni, Carleton’s Hebrew instructor from 1978 to 1998, to honor his teacher, Professor Jonathan Paradise. Its purpose is to provide financial support to Carleton students who wish to learn more about the culture, history, and politics of Israel in order to better understand the global community in which they live. Three scholarships of up to $2,000 will be awarded to students for study in Israel either during the summer of 2010 or during the 2010-11 academic year.

Criteria: Students must be enrolled in Israel in a structured educational program, which need not be a university. The College may take into consideration security arrangements provided by the sponsoring institution when making this award.
