Mellon Fellowships
Special Notice
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has decided to suspend funding for its portable one-year Fellowships in Humanistic Studies as of the fall of 2006. There will be no competition until further notice.
Purpose: The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies are designed to help exceptionally promising students prepare for careers in teaching and scholarship in humanistic disciplines. The Mellon Fellowship is a competitive award for first-year doctoral students. Fellows may take their award to any accredited graduate program in the United States or Canada.
Funding: The Fellowship covers graduate tuition and required fees for the first year of graduate study and includes a stipend of $17,500.
Eligibility:
- College seniors and graduates
- U.S. citizens or permanent resident
- Entering into a program leading to a Ph.D. in a humanistic field
- NOT already already enrolled in a course of study leading to a Ph.D.
- Eligible fields: art history, classics, comparative literature, critical theory, cultural anthropology, cultural studies including all area studies, English literature, ethnic studies, ethnomusicology, foreign language and literature, history, history and philosophy of science or mathematics, humanities, interdisciplinary studies, cultural linguistics, music history and theory, philosophy, political philosophy, religion/religious studies, rhetoric, and women’s studies.
- Minority candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
Selection Criteria: The program seeks candidates who show special potential to become first-class teacher-scholars and scholar-teachers. While academic achievement as demonstrated in GPA and GRE scores is important, selection committees also focus on a candidate's breadth of interest, liveliness of mind and spirit, and ability to communicate. They look for a commitment to teaching coupled with a broad vision of learning.
Application Process: Carleton does not nominate, but there is an on-campus deadline in November to allow time for preparation of recommendations and consultation with the faculty adviser.

You must request an application by December 1. Applications must be submitted nationally by mid-December. The GRE must be taken by early December at the latest. Regional interviews are conducted in February-March.
