Phillips Scholars
Purpose: The Phillips Scholars Program recognizes and rewards private college students who strive to make life better for those with unmet needs. Applicants are challenged to think creatively and become community service leaders.
Applicants are encouraged to focus on areas of interest to the Phillips Foundation, such as human services, health, education, the disabled, and eliminating discrimination.
Funding: Each campus selects a finalist to compete for one of five $14,000 awards:
- $5,000 junior-year scholarship
- $4,000 summer stipend, and
- $5,000 senior-year scholarship
Selection Criteria: The $14,000 Phillips Award provides a generous $4,000 summer stipend to support recipients during their summer service projects. The summer project must be completed in the summer between your junior and senior years along with the following criteria:
- You will be a JUNIOR in the 2006-2007 academic year at an eligible private college;
- You have an excellent academic record (GPA of 2.75+);
- You aspire to serve disadvantaged people;
- You participate in campus activities;
- You have an interest in community service and volunteering;
- You demonstrate current financial need;
- You are committed to designing a Minnesota-focused service project;
- You are prepared to implement a summer service project ($4,000 stipend for 8 weeks working 40 hrs/week or 320 hours over the summer); and
- You must also be prepared to mentor a Phillips Scholar and participate in program activities during your senior year.
Application Process: Submit the following to Sandra Sundstrom, Associate Director of Student Financial Services:
- Application form
- Service project proposal (max. 7 pages)
- What unmet need in MINNESOTA do you plan to address? Why?
- How did you identify the need? What MINNESOTA communities do you intend to serve? How?
- What are your aspirations to serve disadvantaged people?
- Are you planning to work with any specific organizations or people?
- Any additional information that demonstrates you have the skills, experience, drive and leadership qualities needed to design and implement the proposed project.
- Have you made any preliminary contacts?
- Description of past service and leadership experience (max. 2 pages)
- Transcript
- Evidence of financial need form
- 3 letters of recommendation
