Udall Scholarship

Purpose: The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation awards approximately 75 scholarships annually to students pursuing careers related to environmental public policy, or who are Native Americans or Alaska Natives pursuing careers related to health care or tribal public policy. The program honors Representative Udall’s work to preserve the environment and public lands.

Funding: Each scholar receives up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board, whichever is less; Scholars selected as sophomores may be re-nominated and selected for a second year. There will be 30 recipients of honorable mention, $350 scholarship each.

Eligibility: Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and be sophomores or juniors with a minimum 3.0 (9.0) GPA. Majors in any fields are eligible; students should have studied subjects related to environment and public policy in the sciences or social sciences, and should have relevant campus or community service experience.

Selection Criteria: The Udall Foundation seeks candidates who, in both their academic and extracurricular activities, have demonstrated commitment to environmental policy issues. Consideration is given to the student's field of study, career objectives, and the extent to which the individual has the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to his or her field.

Application/Nomination Process: Carleton College may nominate up to six candidates each year. On-campus deadlines are normally early in Spring semester. Prospective applicants are advised to inform themselves about the application process on the Foundation’s website, and contact either the Udall Scholarship faculty adviser as soon as they decide they are interested.
