The Bardwell Smith Prize for Excellence in the Study of Religion

Established in 2006 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Carleton's Department of Religion, this prize celebrates the leadership and career of the John W. Nason Professor of Religion and Asian Studies, Emeritus, Bardwell L. Smith. The award honors Professor Smith's intellectual legacy of cross-cultural study and commitment to life-long learning. The prize is awarded each year by the Department of Religion to a student who exhibits a passion for the life of the mind, a willingness to take intellectual risks, and a desire to grow and change as a young scholar.
