Voting in the 2006 General Elections

Pre-registration deadline: October 17, 2006 Election Day: Tuesday, November 7, 2006

Carleton is required (by law) to inform each degree seeking student of the following: Each student 18 years old or older and who is a U.S. citizen has the right to vote in local, state, and national elections. Carleton students who are eligible voters may vote either in their home state (absentee ballot) or in Minnesota. Not both. The following web site ‘Declare Yourself’ is helpful for determining your home state's deadlines and to access information on registration and absentee voting etc: http://www.declareyourself.com/.

Students who chose to vote here in Northfield are encouraged to register by the pre-registration deadline of October 17, 2006. Election officials in Rice County seat in Faribault, and Northfield have strongly urged us to encourage students to pre-register. If you registered to vote last year, and this year live in the same building, you do not need to re-register; however if you live in a different building e.g. live in Goodhue Fall 05, now Fall 06 live in Burton, you are required to re-register for the election. (In Minnesota, you may register on-site at the polling location on election day (this is not an option in all Sates), but be aware that the process may take longer and result in extended time at the voting poll.

Voter registration cards are available @ Campus Activities, Residential Life and the Dean of Students Office. Completing the pre-registration form takes only a few minutes.

For those voting in Northfield: The Dean of Students Office is required (by law) to submit a housing list for all Carleton students who live in residence to Rice County Auditor/Treasurer's Office and the City of Northfield 20 days prior to the election. When you complete the registration card, you must state your residence hall/house and room number (not 300 N College Street). Students who live off-campus (in housing not owned by the College) must provide proof of residence: MN driver's license or some other proof of where you live. See www.sos.state.mn.us/election for an official accepted identification list. First time voters, who register by mail, will have to provide identification at the polling site when they cast their ballots.
