Eating in The Dining Halls

Carleton Dining Services operates the Snack Bar in Great Space and Carleton's two dining halls in Burton and the Language and Dining Center. Snack Bar and individual dining hall hours are posted at the beginning of each academic year and whenever changes are made (see Dining Hall Hours).

Meal Cards: Students must present their card to the checkers in order to enter the dining halls. Student I.D. cards are not transferable. Students may choose to pay for their meals in cash. This policy will be strictly enforced in order to protect students who have paid for board plans from increased rates.

Seconds, please: Students are allowed to eat as much as they wish at most of the meals served. Some items may be limited on the first pass through the serving line however, the customer may return for additional helpings.

Dressing for the Occasion: According to State law, you must wear a shirt (or something that covers your trunk) and shoes (or something that covers your feet) in the dining halls.

Feeling Under the Weather: If a student is ill and unable to attend a meal in the dining hall, that student should contact the appropriate dining hall. A meal can then be picked up by someone when he/she brings in the sick person's I.D.

Eating on the Run: Ice cream cones and individual food items (fruit, etc.) that are being consumed in transit are the only foods that may be removed from the dining halls by students who are not participating in our sack meal program or delivering a pre-arranged meal to an ill student (see Ordering a Sack Meal, Feeling Under the Weather).

Taking a Faculty or Staff Member to Lunch: Students are invited to ask a faculty or staff member to join them for lunch free of charge. Faculty and staff members must fill out the appropriate pass with the student accompanying them when entering at the checker tables to take advantage of this program.

Ordering a Sack Meal
Students whose schedules conflict with dining hall hours may participate in the sack meal program (see Carleton Dining Hours). Sack meals are available Monday through Friday on days when classes are scheduled. Sack meal forms can be picked up at dining room checker tables or Food Office. Students who need sack meals on a regular basis can choose to be added to the prearranged sack meal list. Sack meals must be arranged at least one day in advance.

Accommodating Dietary Restraints
Carleton Dining Services will make every attempt to accommodate special dietary needs. Students with medical problems that require special attention should have a letter stating the nature of the dietary restriction sent from his or her physician to the Food Service Director. A meeting should be scheduled with the Director to discuss ways in which he or she can be accommodated.

Arranging Picnics and Pack-Outs
Student groups who will be off-campus during our dining hall hours or groups that wish to have a picnic gathering may arrange a picnic or pack-out through the Burton Food Service Office. Please allow seven days notice to prepare for your event.

Catering Special Events
Banquets and other special events can be arranged through the Catering Office. Please allow seven days notice to prepare for your event.

Offering Comments and Suggestions
Student input is critical to Carleton Dining Services ability to meet demands for quality and variety. Please direct suggestions and comments concerning any food service-related matter to the dining hall managers or the Food Service Director. Students are encouraged to bring their concerns and suggestions to the Dining Board, a committee composed of students, staff, dining hall managers and the food service director. Suggestion boards are located in each dining hall.
