Electrical Distribution Upgrade Project – Phase II

As a follow-up to the successful completion of the first phase of the Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade project (completed in the fall of 2006), the Phase II project began late September with expected completion by the end of 2008.

Phase I provided an upgrade of the north half of campus, and the Phase II project will complete the remaining (south) half. Once completed, the primary campus distribution loop will run at 13,800 volts, which will easily be compatible with future supplemental forms of generation; i.e. full-campus back-up generators, wind turbines, etc.

Phase II will involve running new underground lines to both the West Gym and Laird Stadium as well as a new steam/condensate line. It will also involve the construction of a new, and much larger, electrical vault at the southwest corner of Willis Hall, as well as new distribution (via the tunnel systems) to, and electrical metering for, Sayles-Hill, Severance Hall, Willis Hall, Burton Hall, Davis Hall, Musser Hall, Scoville Hall, the Chapel, and Music & Drama. Provisions will also be made for space in the Willis Vault to allow for future equipment in the event the proposed Arts Center would be added to the system.
