Harry Clewans makes extraordinary woodcut collages from a studio in Oakland California. In a unique process of his own invention, Clewans assembles pictures from prints of odd objects encountered at random and then drawn onto wood blocks, carved, printed and then organized intuitively into large compositions. Clewans does not specialize in images of the human body—his imagery is all over the place from undersea and interplanetary landscapes to historical characters. Seeing is Knowing: the Body presents three works informed by medical illustration and infused with the artist’s fantastic sense of visual complexity and layered meanings.
