Employee Group Term Life Insurance (Non-Union)
Regular, benefit-eligible non-union employees are provided with group term life insurance coverage through The Hartford. The life insurance amount is dependent on salary and age. All premiums are paid by the College.
A benefit is payable under this coverage if death occurs from any cause. If totally disabled when insurance ends, there are special provisions that may extend the death benefit protection. Under certain conditions life insurance may be converted to an individual contract.
Benefit Classes
Less than age 50:
3.5 times your annual earnings, subject to a maximum of $250,000 rounded to the next higher $1,000 if not already a multiple of $1,000.
Age 50-64:
2 times your annual earnings, subject to a maximum of $250,000 rounded to the next higher $1,000 if not already a multiple of $1,000.
Age 65 or more:
1 times your annual earnings, subject to a maximum of $250,000 rounded to the next higher $1,000 if not already a multiple of $1,000.
Reduction in Coverage Due to Age:
The Hartford will reduce the life insurance benefit for you by the percentage indicated in the table below. The reduction applies to the amount of life insurance in force immediately prior to that anniversary date.
Percentage by which current amount of coverage (after all previous reductions) will be reduced is as follows:

The "attained age" for a calendar year is the age as of January 1 of that calendar year. The entire cost of the insurance is paid by Carleton College. For complete details please review the Certificates of Coverage (below) or contact Human Resources (x5989).

Employee Group Term Insurance (Union)
Regular, benefit-eligible union employees are provided with group term life insurance coverage through The Hartford per the CBA (Collective Bargaining Unit). All premiums are paid by the College.
A benefit is payable under this coverage if death occurs from any cause. If totally disabled when insurance ends, there are special provisions that may extend the death benefit protection. Under certain conditions life insurance may be converted to an individual contract.
The group term life insurance amount for the contract years of July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2012 is $47,000 for benefit-eligible union employees.

Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance (Non-Union)
Regular, benefit-eligible non-union employees may elect to purchase voluntary group term life insurance. This would be in addition to the life insurance benefit provided by the College. The cost to the employee is based on age and the benefit amount chosen. All premiums are paid by the employee on an after-tax basis. Full benefit information is available in Human Resources (x5989).
Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance (Union)
Regular, benefit-eligible union employees may elect to purchase voluntary group term life insurance. This would be in addition to the life insurance benefit provided by the College.
The CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) for the years covering July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2012 permits the option of voluntary insurance purchase in the amounts of $1000, $2000, $3000, $4000, $5000, $6000, or $6500; $6500 is the maximum amount available for purchase. The cost to the employee is based on age and the benefit amount chosen. All premiums are paid by the employee on an after-tax basis.
