Digital Archivist/Library Technology Coordinator (Temporary/Full-Time)

    Carleton College welcomes applicants for the position of Digital Archivist and Library Technology Coordinator.  This is a full-time (1.0) FTE, exempt, temporary, benefit-eligible staff position.  This temporary position is a three-year appointment.

    Purpose of this Position:

    The Digital Archivist and Library Technology Coordinator will develop and implement policies and procedures for managing Carleton’s digital archives, assist in the development of the overall college archives, and play a key role in evolving the application of technology in library services and operations.  The Digital Archivist will play a key role in the newly appointed Digital Archiving Group.  This position supports a newly merged archives and library organization.  The Digital Archivist and Library Technology Coordinator reports to the College Librarian and College Archivist.

    Responsibilities:

    Digital Archivist: 

    • Manages digital collections under the purview of the college archives.
    • Implements records scheduling decisions (working as appropriate with Information Technology Services and departments producing records to be archived) to archive both born digital material and locally produced digitized content.
    • Implements appropriate systems and standards for archiving digital assets, including access, retrieval and metadata, security, and long term preservation.
    • Serves as team member on library Archives Team, and on the college Digital Archiving Group.
    • Works with College Archivist as needed on the full range of professional tasks associated with stewarding the colleges’ non-digital archives.
    • Serves as team member on Library Digitizing Team, developing Carleton’s digital collections in library and archives. Consults with faculty, staff, and students on digital initiatives.
    • Takes lead in developing archives web site, and in applications of technology in organizing and making accessible the non-digital archives of the college.
    • Provides reference service for archives.

    Library Technology Coordinator:

    • Provides leadership in adapting technology to library and archives needs.
    • Provides computer programming to implement/customize information systems and services for the library and archives.
    • Serves as the library/archives liaison to Information Technology Services (ITS) and assists with ITS support of public computing in the library/archives.
    • Compiles statistics, analyzes data, and prepares reports relating to areas of responsibility, in support of departmental and library goals. 
    • Participates in departmental, library, college meetings, committees, events, etc., as appropriate or assigned.
    • Other responsibilities, as assigned and as needs change.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Required:

    • MLS/MA or demonstrated equivalency through experience and training.
    • Technologically savvy person with demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems, and interest in and initiative to explore new approaches to describing, organizing, preserving and providing access to library and archival resources.
    • Proficiency in programming (PHP, Java) and experience with relational databases (MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in archives management and digital archiving. 
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Flexibility to cope positively with complex problems in a rapidly-changing work environment.
    • Ability to incorporate new technologies and innovations into existing operations.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with detailed information, with a high level of accuracy & consistency, and to adhere to established practices.
    • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and desire to learn.
    • Outstanding oral and written communication and problem-solving skills. 
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the proven ability to work cooperatively and creatively with others, both inside and outside the organization.  Skills in facilitation, consensus building, and creative problem solving.
    • Strong service orientation.
    • Ability to plan, coordinate and manage projects.

    Preferred:

    • Supervisory and/or training experience.
    • Academic library experience.
    • Understanding of the mission, values, goals and pedagogical approaches employed in liberal arts colleges.
