Shamis Adam
[Shamis Adam]Hi Guys, I’m Shamis Adam, from St. Paul MN. I am Somali but I grew up in Kenya. I moved to the U.S when I was 14. I am a prospective Bio major. I also like traveling within the states and to other countries, watching movies and obsessing over music. I have been a tutor in the Public schools here in Northfield and I loved it because I enjoy working with kids. My passion about science and math allowed me to expand my knowledge by teaching kids in Faribault over the summer. I like to volunteer when I have free time. I like cars although I haven’t owned one of my own yet.
What are the academics at Carleton?
Academics at Carleton can be challenging because of the short ten week term. That does not mean it is not manageable, though. Once you prioritize your academic work and know due dates for your assignments then you should be able to do well in school. Try to balance your course load by taking some writing intensive courses and at least one science course because from my experience lab reports take a longer time to write. So you might want to take at least one fun class with the other ones. Although the classes can be challenging at the end of the term it is rewarding, and you will be able to read and write better which can help you for the next term. My fall term was a little bit intense since I wasn’t accustomed to reading a lot. With help from my peers and professors, I was able to learn how to manage and choose courses that are doable. That gave me time to participate in other activities. DO NOT feel shy to ask your peers for help. Sometimes people might be going through the same struggle as you. Also attend prefect sessions. I learned how important the sessions were only after fall term. Prefect sessions can sometimes compensate for the time that you might spend struggling and thus it will open up your free time.
How does one manage time at Carleton?
Someone once told me, “You have graduated from high school which means you are a step ahead in managing time because you were able to turn that college application in on time.” First, try to use your lagniappe as often as possible because it is very convenient when you do not remember things. Try to do your homework around noon to dinner time on Fridays. I am saying this because I tried to put off my homework until Sunday which never worked. Plan ahead and prioritize your academics over fun. At the end of the day, if you feel you do not have time to finish your work, talk to your professors and ask for an extension but you have to talk to them prior to the due dates. DO NOT panic and say, since it’s late then you should not turn in the assignment. In this situation what works best for me is to calm down and try to get through the homework as much as possible. There are great resources and people who can help you personally on how you can manage time. Do not feel shy or intimidated to ask questions. Otherwise enjoy every moment at Carleton and explore everything you encounter and resources available for you.
