Hello International Class of 2016! Welcome to Carleton!!!

My name is Yuqing Lin, an Economics major junior from Nanjing, China. It is very nice to meet all of you in ISO before school begins. For me, a member of Class of 2014, (Now I understand the BIG difference between 2016 and 2014…) ISO is one of the best memories in past two years.  Then something about myself…I love reading and my favorite English novel is Jane Eyre. So in freshman year, I took an English seminar about following the trace of the writer and imagining yourself. I love watching movies as well and my favorite for 15 years is TITANIC. At Carleton, Students Activities Office sponsored the SUMO movie bus at least once a term and it is a fantastic chance for movies buffs like me to watch the latest release in theatres nearby. Another biggest hobby for me is collecting fluffy toys … J I know it is a bit naïve for, but I just cannot get rid of their coziness!  Well, the next step is get to know YOU more in ISO! Be prepared for the new school and the new term! Both physically and mentally~~I am very looking forward to meeting with you all!!!

What are the academics at Carleton?

To be honest, the academics here are rigorous. As an Asian, I was always being told that I would be good at math. Not until I came here would I know the same rule applies to students from other countries! No matter which class you take, you can always find your classmates smart and hard-working. While making you harder to get top grades, this also benefits you a lot. I would be inspired every time cooperated with other people to do the problem sets (this is also encouraged by many professors). I really love the professors at Carleton. They are just too nice! I love going to their office hours to ask any questions or just chit-chat. I enjoyed working with English professor on papers for over 8 times. I enjoyed talking to my Sociology professor about China’s One Child Policy. I loved showing hilarious pictures from Minneapolis Walker Art Center to my Sculpture professor. I enjoyed arguing with my Philosophy professor about Plato’s Allegory of the Cave…They are willing to help you academically, as well as inspire you further and encourage you to try interesting courses!

How does one manage time at Carleton?

I have a SECRET weapon - the Lagniappe. This is a planner especially designed for Carls. It always has a red lobster on its cover, though I have no idea how this comes…and is available at Student Activities Office (okay…It’s not secret at all now …). I use it to record all plans for each day. It even has cute stickers with words like “mid-terms”, “final exams”, “test”, “assignment due”, “party” and “important”. You may want to put them on whatever date you want and this is very flexible. Since you already got admitted to Carleton, time management should not be a problem for you, I think. So just remember to use some external help!
