Accessing Network Folders

Your Carleton account provides access to personal and group file storage through network folders. There are several different file servers that contain network folders, but the ones you'll mostly be concerned with are called HOME, COLLAB, and COURSES.

The HOME server contains personal storage space for each person on campus. When you connect to the HOME server (see below for instructions), you only see your own space, so it looks like you have the whole server to yourself.

The COLLAB server contains storage space for groups of people, and what you see when you connect to the COLLAB server will depend on what groups you are part of:

  • The Departments folder contains space for academic departments and administrative offices.
  • The Stu_Orgs folder contains space for use by members of student organizations.

The COURSES server contains storage space for every course being taught each term as well as for comps work. When you connect to the COURSES server, you will see a folder for the current term which contains folders for each course organized by academic department. You will also see a folder for comps projects.

You access Carleton's network file storage using the built-in network software on your computer — no special software is required.

Access from a PC

This method only works from on campus, to access your folders from off campus please use NetStorage.

On a PC, network folders are "mapped" to drive letters so that they look like drives in your computer. Here are the steps for Windows 2000 or XP. ITS provided PCs should have a program called Map Network Drives that will also do this for you. (if you have Windows 95/98/ME, use the web instructions further on or consider upgrading to a more modern OS):

1. Double-click My Computer.

2. Right-click on My Network Places and select Map Network Drive.

3. Select a drive letter that isn't assigned to something.

4. Enter the address of the folder you'd like to map; for example:

Your HOME folder: \\home.its.carleton.edu\HOME
The COLLAB folders: \\collab.its.carleton.edu\COLLAB
The COURSES folders: \\courses.its.carleton.edu\COURSES

5. If you want the mapping to remain when you reboot your computer, check Reconnect at logon.

6. Click Finish. Your new drive should appear in My Computer.

Access From a Macintosh

This method only works from on campus, to access your folders from off campus please use NetStorage.

On a Mac, network folders appear as new volumes on your desktop. On newer ITS provided Macs, there is a program called Mount Network Drives that will do this for you. Here are the steps for Mac OS X or 8/9:

Mac OS X

1. From the Finder, choose Go > Connect to Server... (Apple-K).

2. Type the address of the server you want to connect to and press Return; for example:

Your home folder: home.its.carleton.edu/HOME
The COLLAB folders: collab.its.carleton.edu/COLLAB
The COURSES folders: courses.its.carleton.edu/COURSES

3. Enter your username and password and press Return. The volume should open in a new window.

To log out of the server, drag its icon to the trash. For quick access in the future, you can make an alias to the server, which will remount it when you double-click.

Mac OS 8/9

1. Open the Chooser from the Apple menu

2. Click on the AppleShare icon.

3. Click the Server IP Address button.

4. Type the address of the server you want to connect to and press Return; for example:

Your home folder: home.its.carleton.edu/HOME
The COLLAB folders: collab.its.carleton.edu/COLLAB
The COURSES folders: courses.its.carleton.edu/COURSES

5. Enter your username and password and press Return. The volume should appear on your desktop.

To log out of the server, drag its icon to the trash. For quick access in the future, you can make an alias to the server, which will remount it when you double-click.

Access Over the web

You can also access network folders over the web. This isn't as fast as a direct connection from your computer, but it can be useful if you're off-campus with nothing but a web browser.

Connect to http://home.its.carleton.edu/ and log in with your username and password.

Among other options, at the top level you'll see HOME@CARLETON (click for your home directory) and DriveI@COLLAB (click for all of the COLLAB folders).

You can follow links on the page to browse through folders or download files. Use the Upload link to copy a file to the folder you're currently viewing. For a more “desktop” type of view, click the Folder View link to see folders and files rather than web links.

Use the Logout link when you're done, to end your session and prevent other people from seeing your files.
