Commodity Internet
The College purchases commodity Internet from a commercial Internet provider through a bandwidth cooperative. Most of the network traffic to and from Carleton College travels through this connection. The financial cost to the College is significant, so usage is metered and subject to quota.
For the 2008-08 academic year, commodity Internet bandwidth is running at 125 megabits per second (Mbps). Actual usage has typically been under 100 Mbps.
