Public Labs

ITS provides 15 public lab spaces across campus which are maintained and supported by Student Computing. There is a virtual tour of sorts available on the Computer Labs page in the Student Computing Knowledge Base, which you can view by clicking here. Here you can see what each lab has to offer, double-check its hours of operation, or just look at the pictures.

Resources

Each lab offers Macintosh or Windows XP machines. In fact, starting in the summer of 2007, ITS have begun rolling-out new Intel based Apple iMacs which allow us to offer both Mac OS X and Windows XP on the same machines. The labs offer a variety of software intended to support both curricular and personal needs. They also offer access to network drives, printing and full internet access.

Scanners are available in certain labs, including specailty equipment such as slide or film scanning and large flatbed scanners. Machines which are connected to these devices include specialty software such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Support

Support for the public labs is provided by the cheery and helpful staff of the Student Computing Information Center (SCIC), who wake up early and stay up late to provide answers to your computing questions. Feel free to give them a call at x4040, or wander by either of their service points.

The SCIC itself is located on the first floor of the CMC, while the Research/IT desk on the fourth floor of the Gould Library offers a joint service provided by Student Computing and Reference Librarian staff.

Other Labs

In addition to the public labs, several of Carleton's departments offer labs custom-designed for students in their majors:
• The Mathematics and Computer Science department offers four additional labs for math, CS and statistics use.
• The Psychology department offers several labs with specialized software for coursework and research.
• The Music department offers a MIDI lab with keyboards, recording equipment, and music theory, composition and notation software.
• The Physics and Astronomy department offers computers configured to control experiments and take data.
• Other departments also offer labs for their majors — ask your professors!
