Faculty discussion of instructor stations in classrooms
A two-part conversation with faculty to set priorities regarding instructor stations.
The amount of time it takes between classes for an instructor station to reboot is clearly a pain point for faculty, and ITS wants to improve the situation as much as possible. It is a complex issue and while there are a number of potential changes that can be made, each one comes at a cost. With the recognition that faculty concerns in this area are primary, and yet without a magic bullet to resolve all the issues, we are proposing a two-part conversation with faculty to set priorities regarding instructor stations.
This session, the first of "Part 1," will start with a brief presentation of the technical issues involved in managing the instructor stations on campus, including the choices that make them stable, make them flexible, and make them fast. The lion's share of time will be used to gather faculty input on the balance of those choices.
For "Part 2," ITS will summarize the input we have received regarding the tradeoffs and will prepare a set of options for managing the instructor stations based on those priorities. Most of the time will be set for faculty discussion of these options.
Implementation of the new management solution will be ready for fall term. In the meantime, the biggest single thing to alleviate reboot timing issues is to log off the instructor station as close to the actual end of the class time as possible, to help the next person using the room.
We also welcome feedback and input via e-mail, telephone, or in person.
Thanks, and we look forward to the discussions!
