Wednesday, September 19th

  • [Solved] Incoming email outage starting 6:30pm Monday
    • Coincident with a data center air conditioning problem and an Internet routing problem, the legacy antispam device (which we will continue to need as long as GroupWise remains in use) failed at 6:30pm Monday, September 17. Service was restored at 8am September 18, but it will likely take some time for 14 hours' worth of email to be delivered.

Please note that this problem only applies to email received from non-Carleton servers over the Internet. Email among Zimbra, GroupWise, or historical academic users is not affected, nor is email sent from Carleton to the Internet. But some email from the Internet to Carleton might have been lost.

Update 6pm Tuesday: The antispam device has repeatedly gone down. We are working on two parallel tracks: first, to bypass the Barracuda, and second, to rescue the 12,000 email messages that the Barracuda accepted overnight, but failed to forward.

Update 10:45pm Tuesday: A Barracuda engineer rendered the device unusable. The 12,000 email messages stranded on the device since Monday night might be lost. New email is now being routed without the Barracuda.

Update 9am Wednesday: I do not consider sending the only copy of 12,000 stranded email messages to California for possible recovery days hence to be acceptable. I'm going to attempt to image the system for local analysis first, then ship it to the factory.

Update 10pm Wednesday: the Barracuda warranty has been voided, and the system successfully reverse-engineered. All 12,000 queued messages have been processed. Sorry for the delay. We continue to use alternatives from the free software community for antispam and antivirus protection.

Friday, October 12th

  • Email outage
    • mail.carleton.edu is down due to an apparent I/O error on the SAN (scheduled for maintenance tomorrow). We are on the phone with Zimbra, and they have logged on to the system. We're talking about how to restore service without possibly losing the last few changes to the system.

The filesystem reports no errors and is still mounted read/write, but mysql (and mysql only) reports an I/O error. The same files read with dd appears to work. Odd.

11:30pm update: I'm at Carleton now. I've taken a read/write SAN snapshot in order to parallelize the work: on one system, we're running a file system check (which takes some time on a terabyte), and on another we're working with the existing mounted filesystem.

Sunday, October 14th

  • Major Service Disruption 10/14
    • On Sunday, 10/14, 6-9am sysnet is performing some maintenance work on the fiber channel infrastructure in our data center. We are adding two new switches to the fiber channel fabric, removing one of the existing switches, and working with a consultant from Midwave to repair some issues in our existing switch configurations.

Part of this work requires physically moving server connections from one switch to another as we bring up the new devices, which in turn means the servers will be powered off while we do this work. To protect the server data stored in our SANs, we will be powering off _all_ SAN-connected systems. This means that all servers relying directly on our fiber channel infrastructure, as well as all services indirectly dependent on those systems will be unavailable. Expect widespread disruption of most major network services: authentication, Netware volumes, email, enterprise applications (Colleague, Advance, Recruitment+), and so forth. All services should be restored and running by 9:00 am.

Sunday, October 26th

  • Not the end of Daylight Savings Time
    • Prior to 2007, Daylight Savings Time ended the last Sunday of October. Now, it ends the first Sunday of November. Be aware that old software and old devices might fall back an hour on October 26. Current, correct software will fall back on November 2. The Zimbra server will behave correctly, but individual meetings generated on older devices or with out-of-date versions of the Zimbra Outlook Connector may adhere to the old time zone rules, which remain valid for Mexico and other parts of the world. For the week of October 26 to November 2, view your calendar and clocks with a skeptical eye, and contact Rapid Response at x5999 if you need help.

  • Zimbra email unavailable for 6.0.8p2 update
    • Zimbra will be updated from version 6.0.7.1p1 to version 6.0.8p2. The work is expected to take about one hour. This is a minor update with no significant new functionality. Some calendar synchronization problems with iPhone/iPad and Android devices will be fixed. A new "Forget" link on some email address autocomplete items requires explanation. Zimbra remembers how frequently you email people. If a very frequently contacted address matches what you have started to type, it will appear at the very top of the list, rather than sorting alphabetically. If a particular entry bothers you, the "Forget" link will discard the ranking information for that entry, relegating it to its alphabetical place. To eliminate an item from autocomplete entirely, you'll need to go to the Address Book tab and delete the contact.
