GroupWise/Zimbra Compatibility

Mail from GroupWise to former GroupWise users

If you're sending email from GroupWise to people who have been migrated to Zimbra, you need to use the @carleton.edu form of address, not @acs.carleton.edu.

This does not mean that the @acs.carleton.edu addresses no longer function in general! All migrated users are still able to receive @acs.carleton.edu email from the Internet. Only Carleton's GroupWise system will be unable to send email to accounts recently removed from GroupWise.

Departments that have already moved are Chaplain, Student Financial Services, Publications, and the Academic Support Center. If in doubt, use the Carleton LDAP directory to determine the correct email address.

Mail from Zimbra to continued GroupWise users

No problems expected. You can use either the @carleton.edu or @acs.carleton.edu form of address, with a slight preference for the former, because all GroupWise users will migrate to Zimbra by the end of March.

Mail forwarded from GroupWise appears as an attachment in Zimbra

Many Zimbra users have been confused by "phantom attachments" in email messages forwarded from GroupWise. The issue is that GroupWise does, in fact, include the message being forwarded as an attachment, not as part of the message body. The "attachment" link in the Zimbra web client should open a popup window. If it does not, you need to tell your browser to allow popups from mail.carleton.edu. Contact Rapid Response x5999 if you need further assistance.

Free/Busy Info for Zimbra users

You can check a Zimbra user's availability even if you don't have a Zimbra account. Enter the username part of their email address here: @carleton.edu

Free/Busy Info for GroupWise users

Unfortunately, it's not possible to view GroupWise free/busy information without a GroupWise account. Zimbra users will need to phone or email GroupWise users for scheduling assistance.

Appointments sent from GroupWise to Zimbra

Should just work. Add the user@carleton.edu form of the email address as an attendee. If you invite a Zimbra user to a recurring meeting (like "every Tuesday"), the Zimbra user will receive multiple invites, one per instance of the meeting.

Appointments sent from Zimbra to GroupWise

Should just work, with the following important limitation: Do not invite GroupWise users to recurring meetings. Instead, you need to create separate appointments for each instance of the meeting. GroupWise lacks support for the standard recurrence information used by systems like iCal, Exchange, and Zimbra, and will only understand the first instance of the series.
