Sending a Fax using email

You can SEND a fax from your Carleton email account to any fax machine in the world.

******************************

Receiving Faxes is done in a different way.  For more information see:

      https://apps.carleton.edu/campus/its/printing/fax/

******************************

What address do I use to send a fax using email?

The address you put into the "To:" field consists of two parts (with NO spaces between them):

The first part is the phone number of the destination Fax machine, exactly as you would dial it from any campus phone (with the "9", "1", Country code and Area Code, as needed).

The second part contains the following 4 characters (without the quotation marks):  "@f.x"

(Those characters alert the Fax server that this message is really destined for a Fax machine and not an email box.)

******************************

Does this work off-campus as well as on-campus?

If you are on campus, then you can use any email program to send a Fax.

If you are off campus, then please use the Zimbra web client to send a Fax with this service.

******************************

Can I send text in the body of the message?

You can type as much plain text into body (that is, the main message area) of the email message as you'd like.  Make sure it's just plain text, though - no fancy formatting and no embedded images.

******************************

Can I send an attachment via email to a Fax machine?

If you want to Fax something other than plain text, then you can add an attachment to this email.

*** Please note that ONLY PDF documents can be added and Faxed when using Carleton email to send a Fax. ***

The Fax server will NOT accept images, Word Documents, Excel documents, etc.  If you want to Fax any of those kinds of documents, then you must first save or convert them into PDF documents.  Most likely, your on-campus computer has the necessary software to do this conversion.  If you need any help with that, please call Rapid Response.

******************************

Who can I call for help?

If you have any trouble or need any help, please contact Rapid Response at x5999.
