Anti-Virus Software

ITS has negotiated a contract to provide antivirus software for all faculty, staff and student computers, both College-owned and personal. You can have a free copy of McAfee VirusScan for your Windows or Macintosh computers. These programs will both protect you from getting new computer viruses and remove any viruses that may already be lurking on your computer.

Use the links below to download your own copy.

NOTE: These links will only work for authenticated Carleton Faculty, Staff and Students of Carleton.

Macintosh: VirusScan 8.6 for Mac

McAfee VirusScan for Mac is installed in all of the campus Macs.

  • Note: The installer for VirusScan 8.6 for Mac is currently causing problems with MacOS X 10.6. Please check back soon for an updated installer.

Virus Data Updates

When new viruses are discovered, updates for VirusScan are published. The version of VirusScan for Mac you get from this site (currently version 8.6 in Feb, 2009)) will automatically download and install updates for VirusScan after you have successfully installed VirusScan for Mac.

Windows: McAfee VirusScan or Windows Defender

This file is a self extracting installer. After you've downloaded the VirusScan installer, just run McAfeeVirusScanEnterprise880p5.exe from the directory into which you downloaded it.

For Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7:

Download McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 patch level 5:

Download the archive and run to install the application. If the computer already has a version of VirusScan installed, you will have to uninstall that version before this one will install. This installation runs silently; wait at least 10 minutes (until SetupVSE.exe ends) to see it finish.  This installer may remove any other security applications, including Windows Defender.

VirusScan Data Updates

When new viruses are discovered, updates for VirusScan are published. This program will automatically download and install updates at least once a day. However, you should periodically check to make sure that you have the most current update, or you may be susceptible to a new virus.

For Windows 8, 8.1, and 10:

Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 do not need McAfee VirusScan; they come with a comprehensive anti-virus, anti-malware application built in, called Windows Defender, whose user interface is available through the Control Panel or System Tray. (This is not the same limited Windows Defender that came with Windows 7; it's like the Microsoft Security Essentials that was available free for home use on for Windows 7 and XP.)  McAfee VirusScan 8.8 was not compatible with Windows 8.* until patch level 5, and is still not compatible with Windows 10, so ITS does not recommend using McAfee VirusScan at all with Windows 8 or later.

Windows Defender Data Updates

Updates for Windows Defender are published every few days, and automatically downloaded and installed through Windows Update. However, you should periodically check to make sure that you have the most current update, or you may be susceptible to a new virus.
