IT Service Day

This day is a combination of classes, to assist with your curricular activities, and Open House, to highlight some of the current and future projects ITS is working on.

The morning is devoted to a series of short classes, from 9 am - 12 pm (see schedule below).  The afternoon includes classes (from 1:00 - 3:00 pm), a raffle (with great prizes), tours of little-seen areas of ITS, a demonstration of 3-D visualization (very cool), and lots of opportunities to interact with the leadership of ITS, the ATs, the Communications and Training Coordinator, and others throughout the department.  One of the goals for the later afternoon is to get your comments/feedback/involvement/ideas for how IT services can assist you in the way you really work - in other words, you can help us help you.

There will be treats and refreshments throughout the sessions.  We will take a break for lunch from Noon to 1:00 pm.

Some of the highlights for the afternoon include:

The Raffle: We will be raffling off a 1 TB hard drive and several flash drives.  You get a chance to win by attending one of the classes.  Each class you attend enters you into the drawing.  The more classes you attend on Monday, the greater your odds of winning.  The drawings will be held at about 3:15 pm in CMC 06.

3-D Visualizations:  Randy Hoffner, Carleton's Science Support Specialist, will set up and demo a 3-D visualization tool in use primarily by the sciences.  You can put on special glasses that facilitate seeing stereoscopic images on the computer screen.  He will also be demonstrating a web site which combines GIS with GPS.  Not sure what that means?  Come see for yourself in CMC 11 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.

Blue Sky session: Have you seen something involving teaching and technology and wanted to try it?  Perhaps you have an idea for something for one of your classes but haven't really thought it through.  Or maybe you have a vague notion about using something technical in your teaching but don't really know anything about it.  This is a place to bring those things up with some of the folks who might know how to help develop them.  The ATs and others will be available from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in CMC 11.

ITS projects, now and in the future: ITS is currently involved in a number of projects, including upgrades and improved service at a number of points, as well as thinking about and planning for future projects.  Joel Cooper, Sue Traxler, the ITS team Leads and others will be on hand to talk about these endeavors.  They are also eager to hear from you, the faculty and academic staff, about projects you would like to see come to fruition.  Your feedback and involvement in these undertakings is most welcome.  This come-when-you-can session is from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in CMC 06.

Open House tours:

The SCIC (Student Computing Information Center) will be open for business as usual all during the day.  (It is located just outside our two classrooms for the day, CMC 109 and 110.)  Kevin Chapman, Student Computing Coordinator, will be on hand to talk about how he manages a staff of about 40 to assist students all across campus with their computing needs.

The Data Center will be open for tours from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.  Come see where all the "big iron" is running Colleague, Collab, Courses, all your backups, and many other services.  Tours will be conducted by Chris Dlugosz, Network Manager and Carleton alum, class of '92.

Hardware/Repair Area (CMC 12) will also be available for tours from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.   Michael Decker, Hardware Asset Manager, will be on hand to show you how your computers are built and give you a quick tour of the inventory areas in ITS.

Schedule of classes:

9:00 am

Introduction to Microsoft Office 2007 - CMC 109
Doug Foxgrover, Communication and Training

This 1-hour introductory class will demonstrate and highlight some of the updated features in Microsoft Office 2007, including the Ribbon interface.  The Ribbon is a new way to organize and see the options available to you in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  While we will mainly focus on Word, you will be able to apply the things you learn in this class to the other parts of the Office 2007 suite as well.

Creating review exercises with Moodle Quiz - CMC 110

Carly Born, Academic Technologies

The Moodle Quiz module aren't just for graded quizzes, they can also be used to setup dynamic practice exercises for your students to take over and over again as a review.  This demonstration will explain the Question Bank in Moodle and focus on creating practice exercises that are ungraded and available for unlimited attempts in Moodle.  Faculty are encouraged to bring sample exercises (on a flash drive or shared network folder) to create during this hands-on workshop. Email cborn@carleton.edu with questions.

10:00 am

Making Podcasts of your classes - CMC 109
Fiona MacNeill, Academic Technologies, and Lew Weinberg, PEPS and Team Lead

We now have a new, easy-to-use solution for you to capture audio, video and on-screen materials (e.g., PowerPoint presentations) and put them up on the web for your students.  This hands-on session will walk you through the steps of creating a podcast, show you where to find them on the web and leave time to discuss the various situations in which this would be a useful tool to use.

Moodle Gradebook - CMC 110
Carly Born, Academic Technologies

Moodle Gradebook is a full-featured gradebook that easily integrates with the rest of your Moodle course materials.  Some of the advantages of Gradebook include keeping all of your course materials in one place, making it possible for graders to enter their grades directly into your gradebook, and answering the question "How am I doing in this course?"

This hour will look at how Moodle automatically generates Gradebook entries for your Assignments, rated Forums, and other graded activities.  We will discuss how to setup grading categories, weight categories and assignments, and how to include grade items for participation and attendance.  Time permitting, we'll also take a look at how graders can enter the grades for the assignments they grade without accessing any other grade items (thus respecting FERPA).  Please send questions to cborn@carleton.edu.

11:00 am

PowerPoint skill session - CMC 109
Fiona MacNeill, Lew Weinberg and Doug Foxgrover

This session will focus on using PowerPoint in the classroom, highlighting 3 areas in particular:
a) Principles of successfully using slideware (PowerPoint, KeyNote, other presentation software);
b) Inserting images into your slides;
c) Inserting video clips into your slides

Managing and publishing your bibliographies with EndNote - CMC 110
Charles Priore, Science Librarian

Charles Priore is Science Librarian for both Carleton and St. Olaf College. He has been on the forefront of bibliographic software since 2000, bringing EndNote to both campuses.  This lively session will demonstrate how to use EndNote to search the Bridge or other database,  how to create references, how to use the "Cite While You Write" feature and how to create a stand-alone bibliography.

Collaborative writing using Google Docs for Education - CMC 109
Paula Lackie, Academic Technologies

Google Docs is a great addition to anyone's productivity toolkit, especially if you're ever working with collaborators on documents,  spreadsheets, or presentations.   It's also great for students working on groups projects.  It's also reasonably good for doing data entry! .. As with any new tools, there are some tricks and tips that we can share to help you make the best of it.  This session will be tailored to the needs and interests of the people in the room so come with them in mind.  Paula Lackie will be your tour guide bringing you the ups (and some downs) of this toolset.

Overview of (new) presentation technologies - CMC 110
John Schott, Heidi Eyestone, Fiona MacNeill, Carly Born, Doug Foxgrover

Visual resources are rapidly becoming a vital quotient of any subject, not only to illustrate, but also to invigorate!  This will be quick introduction to a number of new and not-as-new ways to use information technologies to make, present and interact with "slideshows" of one kind or another.

We are all familiar with PowerPoint, and we'll start by showing how to add narration to a slideshow.  Then we'll show you some Internet-enabled programs that can do this and much more.  We'll demonstrate an application that makes it easy to produce timelines.  We'll (re)visit ARTstor and OIV (don't worry about the acronyms now) and the wealth of images available to you for your teaching.  And we'll demonstrate a new presentation tool that uses a different metaphor than the traditional PowerPoint-like slideshow.

   Other events:

3-D Visualization and GIS Demos!  (CMC 11,  1:00 - 3:00 pm)

Randy Hoffner, Carleton's Science Support Specialist, will set up and demonstrate a 3-D visualization tool in use primarily by the sciences.  This is hands-on - you get to wear the special glasses!  He will also be showing off an application which uses a GIS (Geographic Information System) with GPS (Global Positioning System) to locate certain plants on the surface of the earth.  He is helping to develop a system like this for use on handheld devices in the Arb.  This is cool stuff.

ITS Open House  (3:00 - 5:00 pm)

Kevin Chapman will show you around the SCIC, tour the Data Center with Chris Dlugosz, meet Michael Decker in the Hardware/Repair area and see where your computers are built.  (See fuller descriptions above.)  All these are open for tours in CMC.

Raffle!  (CMC 06,  3:15 pm)

We will be raffling off a 1 TB hard drive and several flash drives.  You get a chance to win by attending one of the classes.  Each class you attend enters you into the drawing.  The more classes you attend on Monday, the greater your odds of winning.  The drawings will be held at about 3:15 pm in CMC 06.  (You'll need to be present to win the grand prize (1 TB hard drive), but not to win any of the other prizes.)

Talk with the Director and other staff  (CMC 06,  3:00 - 5:00 pm)

Come hear about current and future projects, and let us know what's on your mind.  This is a chance for discussion of ideas on how ITS can fulfill its Mission:

We help the Carleton community work, learn, create, and collaborate by
improving access to information and facilitating the use of technology.

Blue Sky session  (CMC 11,  3:00 - 5:00 pm)

A chance to talk about ideas you've had but haven't gotten off the ground yet.  This is a place to bring those things up with some of the folks who might know how to help develop them.  The ATs and others will be available from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in CMC 11.
