Network configuration

Once you’ve plugged in, you may need to change a few settings to tell your computer that it’s on the network.

Windows XP/2000

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel
  2. Double-click Network Connections
  3. Double-click Local Area Connection
  4. Click on Properties
  5. Select Internet Properties (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
  6. Verify that your IP address and DNS server are obtained "automatically", close all windows.

Windows 98/ME

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panels
  2. Double-click the Network control panel
  3. Choose the TCP/IP protocol that mentions "Ethernet"
  4. Click Properties and make sure your IP address and DNS server are being obtained “automatically”, close all windows

Mac OS X

  1. Choose System Preferences... from the Apple menu.
  2. Click on the Network icon.
  3. Choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show menu at the top of the panel.
  4. Select the TCP/IP tab and choose Using DHCP from the Configure menu.
  5. Close the System Preferences window.

Mac OS 8 or 9

  1. Choose Control Panels > TCP/IP from the Apple menu.
  2. Choose Ethernet from the Connect via: menu at the top.
  3. Choose Using DHCP Server from the Configure: menu.
  4. Make sure the Use 802.3 checkbox is unchecked, if present.
  5. Close the TCP/IP control panel
