The physical connection
When you get to campus and pick up your room key, you’ll also receive a packet containing a network cable and setup instructions. If you don't get a packet at this time, you can also pick one up at the Student Computing Information Center (SCIC).
If you're on campus, your Ethernet port is on the wall along with your phone jack. Each port is labeled with a number and either a "V" for voice/phone or a "D" for data/Ethernet. You may have more than one set of ports in the room, but only one port per person is active, so some of them may not be active. Look for the ones with a sticker next to them to tell you which one to plug into.
Once you’ve identified your Ethernet port, plug your network cable into it and the other end into the port on your computer. On some computers there are indicators near the port that light up when you’re connected to the network. If you have these, and they don’t light up, try a different port on the wall. If you can’t find a working port to plug into, call Student Computing at x4040.
If you find that the cable is too short (or too long), you can bring it to the SCIC and swap it out for the correct length. Please measure the distance between the port and your computer before you stop by so that we can get you the correct length.
