Security Updates

All Operating Systems are under constant development either to improve them or to resolve existing problems. The most common type of updates or patches are those which address security concerns.

When you register your machine on the Carleton network for the first time, it will be scanned to ensure that it has the latest critical security updates. You will not be allowed on the Carleton network unless your computer is properly patched.

Windows Updates

Microsoft Windows is under constant scrutiny and attack from virus writers, hackers and others with a variety of malicious intents. Security holes are found in Windows with unfortunate regularity but are normally patched within a short period of time. Patches are downloaded and installed automatically through the Windows Update tool which should be activated on your machine. If you're not running Windows Update to get the patches for those holes, your computer is at a high risk for being taken over.

To manually run Windows Update, select one of the following menu paths:

Either:  Start > Windows Update
Or:  Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Windows Update

To set Windows Update to run automaticaly:

  1. Select: Start [> Settings] > Control Panel
  2. Select the Security Center
  3. Click on Automatic Updates
  4. Read through the options and set how you would like Windows to run updates.
  5. When finished, click OK.

Mac OSX Updates

While there are generally fewer problems or attempted attacks on the Macintosh operating system, Apple do release security updates on a regular basis. Most Macs automatically check for updates to your software when they start up and will prompt you to download and install these updates. However, you can also run the update manually.

To manually run Software Updates, select the following menu path:

Apple > Software Update...
