Personal Computer Purchasing
Buying a new computer? ITS can help in two ways:
- Our recommended specifications can help you buy a computer that will function well on the campus network and support the software that you'll want to use.
- We've negotiated special deals with several major computer vendors, allowing you to buy recommended configurations at significant discounts.
Recommendations:
If you're buying a PC, we suggest a system that meets at least these specifications:
- 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor;
- 2GB memory (RAM);
- 120 GB hard drive (more is better, faster is better);
- 100/1000 Mbps network interface ("Ethernet");
in portables, also 802.11g wireless networking; - discrete video card with at least 128MB of video memory,
like those from ATI and nVIDIA (not integrated graphics); - Windows Vista (Business or Ultimate, recommended), or Windows XP SP2 Professional.
We also recommend purchasing Microsoft Office 2007, and investing in a 3-year warranty.
If you're buying a Macintosh, any new system is fine, but be sure to get at least 2GB of memory.
We also recommend purchasing Microsoft Office 2008 for the Macintosh.
