Borrowing from St. Olaf

Q: How do I borrow materials from St. Olaf?

A: Materials can be requested on Bridge, the Carleton/St. Olaf joint library system. You can request items when viewing an individual record in Bridge by clicking the "Request" button. Items are delivered to the Carleton Library from St. Olaf daily, Monday-Friday. NOTE: If you need library materials from St. Olaf between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, it is best to go to the St. Olaf Library and checkout items in person since there is no weekend delivery between the campuses.

Q: Who can use the Carleton/St. Olaf borrowing exchange service?

A: The Carleton/St. Olaf Exchange services is for Carleton and St. Olaf students, faculty, and staff.

Q: What kinds of materials can be requested?

A: St. Olaf will loan circulating books, government documents, periodicals, and DVDs. For non-circulating print items, photocopied articles or excerpts from reference works will be supplied.

Q: How do I register for library privileges at St. Olaf?

A: All Carleton students, faculty, and staff are automatically registered at the St. Olaf Library for borrowing privileges.

Q: How long does it take to receive the material I requested?

A: Requested items are transported via the Carleton/St. Olaf courier. This process usually takes 1-2 working days.

Q: How am I notified when the material arrives?

A: The Carleton Library will notify you by email when your items arrive. Items are held for you at the Circulation Desk for 5 days.

Q: How long can I use St. Olaf library materials?

A: Generally, books are loaned to students for seven weeks and to faculty and staff for one year. Periodicals are loaned for one week.

Q: Where do I return St. Olaf library materials when I'm finished with them?

A: St. Olaf library materials can be returned to the Carleton Library Circulation Desk or directly to the St. Olaf Library.

Q: What would happen if I didn't return a St. Olaf library book by the due date?

A: St. Olaf will send overdue notices. If overdue items are not returned on time, St. Olaf will charge you $20 for fines and $60 for replacement of each overdue item. If the item is returned in good condition, the $60 replacement fee will be waived; the $20 fine is not waived.

Q: What if an item I have checked out is recalled?

For recalled items, if material is not returned by the recall due date, a fine of $5 per day will be assessed. If the item is not returned by the fourth overdue notice, you will be fined $20 and billed $60 for replacement of each overdue item.

Q: Can I just go up to St. Olaf myself?

A: Absolutely! Members of the Carleton community are welcome to visit and use the libraries at St. Olaf in person. If you need library materials from St. Olaf between Friday afternoon and Monday morning, it is best to go to the St. Olaf Library and checkout items in person since there is no weekend delivery between the campuses.
