The Gould Library has purchased an EndNote software site license for the Carleton College community. EndNote may be installed on any computer owned by Carleton, its students, or its employees using the links on this page. Please contact the appropriate person listed below if you have any questions.
Students: EndNote is available in ITS student computing labs. Ask at the SCIC, or make an appointment with a librarian to install EndNote on your own computer.
Faculty and academic staff: Please contact your librarian if you have any questions about installing EndNote on your own computer.
Administrative staff: Contact ITS Rapid Response to have EndNote installed on the computer in your office.

Upgrading from a previous version of EndNote?
While it is not strictly required, we recommend that you uninstall older versions of EndNote before installing your new version of EndNote. Before you begin, it is important to back up your EndNote libraries (including corresponding .DATA folders), custom styles, import filters, connection files, and spell check dictionaries, as well as any Word documents that use Cite While You Write.
To uninstall the older version of EndNote:
- From the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel, or choose Settings and then Control Panel.
- Select Add or Remove Programs.
- In the list of currently installed programs, select your currently installed version of EndNote.
- Click the Remove button.
Updating old libraries
EndNote will create a copy of any old EndNote libraries in the new format, and leave the original version untouched. Upon opening an old library with the new version of EndNote, you will be asked for permission to convert the library. Click OK to create the new version of the library.
To Install EndNote
- Make sure no applications are running—including virus protection software and Microsoft Word.
- Double-click the EndNote installer to start the installation program.
- Follow the instructions on screen to complete the installation. Use the Next button to move forward between the installation dialogs.
- Open EndNote to use the EndNote Program Updates to install any updates
- In EndNote, go to the Help menu and choose EndNote Program Updates. This will download and install any updates. Follow the prompts.

- Windows XP with Service Pack 2, or Windows Vista

EndNote X2 patch for Word 2008 on Macs:
- Download the patcher file (29.3 MB). You will find the update in the Download folder.
- Close EndNote.
- Open the "EndNoteX2.0.1 Patch Installer" folder. Double-click on the "EndNote X2.0.1 Patcher" file and follow the prompts.
- Download the file "CWYW_ENX201_Mac.zip" (5.2 MB)
- Unzip the new "Cite While You Write" folder and place it in the Applications:EndNote X2 folder.
- Open EndNote, and go to the EndNote menu.
- Select "Customizer" from the EndNote menu.
- Check the box in front of the "Cite While You Write" option.
- Click next until the Customizer is finished.
- Open a library.
- Open Word and check the Tools menu for the EndNote submenu.

EndNote X1 patch for Word 2008 on Macs:
- Download the file "CWYW_Word_2008.dmg" (2 MB).
- Close EndNote and Microsoft Word 2008.
- Double-click the "CWYW_Word_2008.dmg" file to mount.
- Double-click the "CWYW For Word 2008" Disk Image to open.
- Double-click the "CWYW For Word 2008.pkg" file to start the installer.
- Follow the installer prompts to update Word 2008.
- If you do not see the tools after installing, get troubleshooting steps for EndNote X1 and Word 2008.
System Requirements
- EndNote runs under the Macintosh operating system versions 10.3.9+ and 10.4.x.

Hardware Requirements

- In order to use EndNote’s Connect command, an Internet connection is required. To use the Open Link command to access a Web site, you also need a web browser installed.
EndNote X
EndNote 10 for Windows Installer (77.1 MB) (requires Carleton login)
Extract all files from the compressed folder and run the EndNote setup.
Windows Reqirements:
- Windows 2000 (service pack 3), XP (service pack 2), Vista
- Pentium 450-megahertz (MHz) or faster processor
- 180MB hard disk space available
- 256 MB RAM
- Cite While You Write feature: Microsoft Word 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007.
EndNote 10 for Mac Installer - (50 MB) Ctrl-click and choose "Save Link As" (requires Carleton login).
Open the disk image and drag the EndNote 10 folder to your Applications folder.
Note: you must uninstall EndNote 9 before installing EndNote 10.
- Log off of all servers
- Quit ALL applications!
- Launch EndNote 9, click Cancel when the first EndNote screen comes up.
- Go to the EndNote 9 menu and choose "Customizer"
- Check the box that says “Remove EndNote From This Computer”
- Click Next -- Note: if have any EndNote Libraries in the EndNote folder, move them to another folder now.
- Click Exit
- Go to the Applications Folder and drag the EndNote 9 folder to the trash.
- Empty the trash
- Now install EndNote X.0.2 by dragging the EndNote folder to your Applications folder, making sure once again that there are no programs running.
Mac Requirements:
- Mac OS X (10.3.9 - 10.4.x)
- PowerPC or Intel Macintosh 450 MHz or higher
- Hard disk with 180 MB available
- Minimum 256 MB of available RAM
- Cite While You Write: Microsoft Word X, 2004.
EndNote Support Files: Styles, Filters, Connection Files
The EndNote program uses hundreds of support files for transferring bibliographic data between your EndNote Library and your word processor (Microsoft Word), reference databases, and library catalogs.
Output Styles control how citations will be formatted in your Microsoft Word document;
Filters control how citations exported from particular reference databases and library catalogs are imported into your EndNote Library; and
Connection Files are used for interactively searching reference databases and library catalogs from within EndNote.
Gould librarians support and update the style, filter and connection files to make sure they work correctly with our resources. The most recent versions of the files are on kept on Collab at COLLAB\Departments\LIBR\Common\Applications\Windows in folders named PCStyles, PCFilters and PCConnections. The files here work for both Macs and PCs.
On Campus: To make sure you are using the most current copies of the files
- Open EndNote.
- Go to EndNote -> Preferences on a Mac, or Edit -> Preferences on a PC.
- Choose Folder Locations from the left side of the preferences window.
- Set the folder locations to the appropriate folders on Collab (COLLAB\Departments\LIBR\Common\Applications\Windows) for Connections, Filters and Styles.
- Click OK.
Off Campus: You should download a recent set of the Gould Library styles, filters and connections to your computer using the links below.
- Follow the instructions below to download styles, filters and connection files.
- Open EndNote.
- Go to EndNote -> Preferences on a Mac, or Edit -> Preferences on a PC.
- Choose Folder Locations from the left side of the preferences window.
- Set the folder locations to the appropriate folders on your computer.
- Click OK.
Please contact your liaison librarian to report problems with a particular style, filter, or connection file, or to request that a file be created for a particular resource.
Output Styles Download

- Quit EndNote.
- Locate your Styles folder, located in your EndNote folder on your hard drive.
- Open your Styles folder, and trash all of the styles in it (but do not trash the Styles folder).
- Click on the link to download the new styles set.
- Stuffit Expander should automatically expand the download into a folder called MacStyles containing the new set of styles.
- Move the styles into your Styles folder where your previous styles were.
- Trash the now-empty MacStyles folder.
