Download EndNote
If you are a Carleton student, staff or faculty member, you can download EndNote and the accompanying style, filter, and connection files from this page.
What is EndNote?
- EndNote is an online search tool -- it provides a simple way to search online bibliographic databases and retrieve the references directly into EndNote. (EndNote can also import data files saved from a variety of online services, CD-ROMs, and library databases.)
- EndNote is a reference and image database -- it specializes in storing, managing, and searching for bibliographic references in your private reference library. Now you can organize images including charts, figures, and equations with a caption and your own keywords.
- EndNote is a bibliography and manuscript maker -- it formats citations and figures in Microsoft Word with the Cite While You Write technology. Watch the bibliography and figure list appear as you insert citations in your manuscript. New Microsoft Word templates guide you through the exacting manuscript requirements of publishers.
EndNote at Carleton
The Gould Library has purchased an EndNote software site license for the Carleton College community. EndNote may be installed on any computer owned by Carleton, its students, or its employees.
If you are a member of the Carleton College community, you may use the links on this page to download and install EndNote, and download the style, filter, and connection files.
EndNote Web
EndNote Web (www.myendnoteweb.com) is a new product that includes most of the basic functionality of EndNote, but can be accessed from anywhere having an internet connection.
Collecting References:
- Never use the "direct export to EndNote" option in any database. This is set up to launch the desktop version of EndNote rather than EndNote Web. Instead, save your bibliographic references found in our research databases as a .txt file and import it using EndNote Web's "Import" screen, or (if this doesn't work) export the references for Generic reference software.
- The "Online Search" section of EndNote Web's "Collect" tab is designed to search our library catalog and those of other schools. Select "Carleton Coll" from the drop-down list to search Bridge.
Cite While You Write (CWYW) from EndNote Web:
- College lab computers are not equipped to supply you with the EndNote Web CWYW toolbar in Microsoft Word. To include citations in your paper using EndNote Web, follow the instructions listed at www.myendnoteweb.com under Help > Format Paper. Note that if your style calls for citation of specific page numbers, you will have to type those in after the formatting process is complete.
- On your own computer (not a lab computer), you can set up Microsoft Word with toolbars for both the EndNote Desktop and EndNote Web versions of this software follow the instructions on the EndNote support page for the CWYW Toolbar. ***Be sure to delete any EndNote files you find in the Word startup folder and replace them with the files that you can download from that support page.*** Once this is done, you can toggle back and forth between the toolbar for the EndNote Application and EndNote Web by following these instructions.
- If using the EndNote Web CWYW Toolbar:
- With your Word document open, place the cursor in the location where the citation should appear.
- Click the Find Citation(s) button in the EndNote Web toolbar. Or from the Tools menu, select EndNote Web then Find Citation(s). The Find Citation(s) dialog will appear.
- Enter a search term in the Search field to find the reference or references to insert. Refer to Search Tips in this topic or search operators for ways to refine your search.
Note: The search term must be a minimum of three characters.
- Click the Search button.
- Select the reference. To insert multiple references in one citation, click each reference while holding the Ctrl key.
- Click the Insert button.
EndNote Help
- Any of the Gould library liaisons can help you with EndNote questions and problems. Please feel free to stop by the Research/IT desk in the reference room with your questions, or make an appointment with your library liaison.
- Download the library's Using EndNote guide (pdf document - 136kb).
- EndNote manuals are available both on Open Reserve and in Ready Reference in the Library.
- The EndNote User's Guides and a Demo Guided Tour are available for download from the EndNote Support & Services page under the heading "Guides, Tip Sheets, and Information Pages."
