Federal Government Information
GPO Access
- GPO Access (Superintendent of Documents) Provides full-text of the Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Register, Monthly Catalog, Congressional Record, and other Congressional and agency documents. Includes several searchable databases.
- GPO Access on the Web (Purdue University) Another gateway to Congressional and federal government information and publications, this site provides detailed assistance for locating specific documents or kinds of information within the GPO databases.
Agencies
- U.S. Federal Government Agencies (LSU) A comprehensive hierarchical listing of agencies or search by agency or keyword.
Statistics and Data Sets
- Bureau of Labor Statistics Provides dowloadable data concerning labor and economics. A search engine is provided and summary data and graphs are also included.
- CenStats This site allows specialized searching for census data based on geographic location, particular data sets, etc.
- STAT-USA Provides access to the National Trade Data Bank, the Survey of Current Business, and a wealth of business, economic, and trade information and data, both nationally and internationally.
- Statistical Abstract of the United States This site provides the full-text of the 1997 Statistical Abstract. The entire text is downloadable in PDF format. Also includes statistics in brief, frequently requested tables, state rankings, and state and county profiles extracted from the full document.
- Data on the Net (UC San Diego) A collection of 813 internet sites of numeric social science statistical data, data catalogs, data libraries, social science gateways, addresses and more. Much of the data is ready to download, and an internal search engine is provided for the site.
- ICPSR The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) provides access to the world's largest archive of computerized social science data covering a wide range of subjects. An excellent source for data sets. Paula Lackie (plackie) is Carleton's coordinator.
- University of Virginia Social Sciences Data Center The Social Sciences Data Center maintains a rich collection of numeric data distributed through the US Depository Library Program, the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), and various international government organizations, as well as data from non-governmental surveys such as the National Health and Social Life Survey.
Census
- U.S. Census Bureau Home page of the U.S. Census Bureau, this extensive site includes various access tools, an A-Z listing of subjects, and other searching options.
- CenStats This site allows specialized searching for census data based on geographic location, particular data sets, and other specified parameters.
- Census Links from the University of Minnesota Links to Minnesota data and to many other sites containing Census data.
- United States Historical Census Data Browser 1790-1960 (University of Virginia) The data presented here describe the population and economy of U.S. states and counties from 1790 to 1960. You can produce lists of data by state or county that can be sorted, calculate proportions, or graph any of the variables. The site is not intended as a tool for downloading data for further research or more involved manipulation.
Legislative Information
- THOMAS: Legislative Information on the Internet A good source for legislative information, the site provides information about bills, floor actions, roll call votes, committee information, and the Congressional Record. Useful for legislative tracking or histories.
- LLSDC's Legislative Sourcebook (Law Librarians' Society of Washington, D.C.) Quick links to House and Senate committee documents and hearings.
- U.S. Congress Sponsored by the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, this site contains Congressional publications, calendars, and committee membership directories.
- Congress.org This site includes the Congressional Directory, committee member information, and other directory services for locating and contacting members of Congress.
- Congressional Hearings on the Web This University of Michigan website provides comprehensive links to congressional hearings. Search by committee, government agency, lobby group, or subject. Predates the LLSDC (above).
- Senate Home page of the Senate, this site provides information about legislative activities, committees, and Senators. Also includes information about the Senate history, terminology, and procedures.
- Senate - Committees Links to information about committees of the U.S. Senate.
- House of Representatives Home page of the House, this site provides schedules, roll call votes, legislative processes, current happenings on the floor, and more.
- House of Representatives - Committees Links to information about committees of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Judicial Information
- Public Laws Includes the U.S. Statutes at Large, 1789 to date, and other links to information on public laws.
- Academic Universe/Legal Research The Legal Research section provides full text access to federal, state & international legal materials.
- U.S. Supreme Court Decisions (Cornell University) Includes current and over 580 historic Supreme Court opinions. Also contains the current court calendar, a schedule of oral arguments, and background information on current cases.
- FindLaw: Supreme Court Decisions An excellent resource for locating full-text Supreme Court decisions. Includes all opinions from 1893-1998. The site allows searching by citation, party name, or keyword and includes a browsable list of all decisions arranged alphabetically by year. Also includes links to other Supreme Court and Circuit Court decisions citing the given case.
