Encyclopedia of Classical Philosophy

This encyclopedia contains more than 270 entries covering Greek and Roman philosophy from the 6th century BCE to the 6th century CE.

Dictionary Of Classical Mythology

Translated from the French original, this dictionary also includes genealogical tables and a table of principal ancient sources.

The Cambridge Ancient History

The fourteen-volume Cambridge Ancient History covers the history of the classical world from prehistory to 650 CE. Articles are contributed by scholars and include maps, tables, figures, and bibliographies.

Der Neue Pauly: Enzyklopädie der Antike

This illustrated fifteen-volume encyclopedia covers virtually all aspects of the Greco-Roman world. Although written in German, it includes contributions from scholars around the world.

Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World
Reference Atlases: G1033 .B3 2000
The Barrington Atlas contains large, detailed maps of the classical world. Topographical and bibliographic information is available on the accompanying CD-ROM.

Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae (LIMC)
Ref N7760 .L49 1981
This comprehensive eight-volume lexicon covers depictions of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman mythology in classical art. Each volume consists of two parts: the first includes sources, history of figures, typical attributes, and a catalog of representations; the second contains illustrations corresponding to the text in the first part. Articles are in German, French, Italian, and English.

The Liddell-Scott-Jones lexicon of classical Greek is available as a two-volume printed dictionary and as a searchable online database.

A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature

Finding Books

Bridge

Bridge is the shared online catalog of the libraries of Carleton College and St. Olaf College.

When starting out, it is often helpful to do a word search on your topic, and then to examine the subject headings of the results you find relevant. L'Année Philologique

This annual index covers Greco-Roman archaeology, history, law, linguistics and literature, philosophy, and science and technology from the 2nd millennium BCE to 800 CE. Although written in French, it indexes about 1,500 periodicals written in various Western languages, from 1924 to the present.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) (1975- present)
A&HCI indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, many of which focus on classical studies. It features current and retrospective bibliographic information, author abstracts, and cited references.

Nestor: Bibliography of Aegean Prehistory and Related Areas (1957-1999)
Nestor is an international bibliography of publications in the areas of Aegean studies, Homeric society, Indo-European linguistics, and other related fields.

TOCS-IN: Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists (1992- present)
Eighty volunteers from sixteen countries began indexing the tables of contents of classics periodicals in 1992. The index now covers about 160 journals and over 23,000 articles.

Patrologia Latina Database
This is a collection of primary texts related to the history of Latin Christianity. According to their web site, "the Patrologia Latina comprises the works of the Church Fathers from Tertullian in 200 CE to the death of Pope Innocent III in 1216."

Perseus Digital Library - Classics Collection
This collection contains primary and secondary texts, site plans, digital images, maps, and art and archaeology catalogs related to ancient Greece and Rome.

Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG): A Digital Library of Greek Literature
TLG is a digitized collection of all ancient Greek texts beginning with Homer and continuing through the fall of Byzantium in 1453 CE. TLG will eventually include all Greek literature up to the present era.

According to the Archaeological Institute of America, their journal covers "the art and archaeology of ancient Europe and the Mediterranean world, including the Near East and Egypt, from prehistoric to late antique times."

The American Journal of Philology is a forum for international classicists and philologists. It features original research on Greek and Roman literature, linguistics, history, society, religion, and philosophy.

The Ancient World: A Scholarly Journal for the Study of Antiquity

This semi-annual journal publishes original research in the fields of geography, archaeology, numismatics, epigraphy, and religion as they relate to antiquity, from the most ancient civilizations to the Byzantine epoch.
