Finding Books

Bridge http://bridge.library.carleton.edu/search; Bridge is our online catalog, an access point for all of the books, periodicals, government documents, and electronic resources available at Carleton College. When searching in Bridge, it is important to understand that Bridge can look for the titles of journals, but not for the articles within those journals.

Library of Congress Subject Headings are the words and phrases you can use to do a subject search in Bridge (as opposed to a word search, where you may use any words you like). The term Classical Archaeology is not a subject heading and therefore will not work in a subject search. By using the proper subject heading (Classical Antiquities) you avoid getting results like Ethnobotany: Evolution of a Discipline.

When starting out, it is often helpful to do a word search on your topic, and then to examine the subject headings of the results you find relevant. Bridge displays these subject headings as links and clicking on one of them will automatically conduct a subject search for that particular topic. If you have trouble finding relevant sources using a word search, try consulting the printed volumes of Library of Congress Subject Headings in the reference collection.
