Since the mid-19th century, artists and photographers have been commissioned to produce illustrations and photographs for the US Government. These images – ranging from detailed studies of insects, microscopic details of plants, and paintings of predatory birds – were published in documents and reports produced by various government agencies. This exhibition focuses on illustrations produced for the Department of Agriculture, which enlisted the skills of talented artists, photographers, lithographers, and printers to produce images which supported and documented the work of the Department.
