At the Honors Convocation on May 30, 2008, Gould Library was awarded the 2008 Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for a college library by Julie Todaro, President of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and Scott Alan Smith, Western District Manager for Blackwell's Book Services. The award, sponsored by ACRL and Blackwell's Book Services, recognizes each year the staff of one college, one university, and one community college library for programs that deliver exemplary services and resources to further the educational mission of the institution.

According to Camila Alire, chair of the 2008 Excellence in Academic Libraries Selection Committee, "'The Gould Library at Carleton College was recognized for working hard in a team atmosphere in order to provide a welcoming environment for its students and faculty by utilizing technology to enhance space, services, and resources."

Samuel Demas, College Librarian at Carleton College, adds, "'To us, this award is all about esprit de corps within the library, and partnerships in the college community and beyond. The Gould library staff works hard to nurture a culture of creative collaboration, and every day it models the teamwork that underlies superb service. It is a thrill for us to receive this validation of our values and of our efforts to serve the Carleton community.'"

The full text of the ACRL press release is available online at the ACRL Web site. You can read the library's application for the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries award by clicking on the document link to the right. The application document highlights collaboration between library staff and faculty, students, and other academic support units on campus; provides background on the development of the library's art and exhibitions program, our partnership with St. Olaf's libraries, and the Research/IT Desk; and details our innovative approaches to information literacy and curricular support. Moreover, it speaks to our continuing commitment to provide the best possible service and support and the best possible library experience to the students and faculty of Carleton.

The award includes an engraved crystal plaque, now on display at the entrance of Gould Library, and an unrestricted monetary gift. The staff of Gould Library has chosen to give the money to the library of Dillard University in New Orleans, whose collections and facilities were devastated by flooding from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
