Celebrate Open Access Week at Carleton

October 19, 2009
By Kathy Tezla

Carleton is joining others across the world in celebrating Open Access Week.  Open Access (OA) is a movement that has been underway since 2002. OA is a growing international movement that encourages the unrestricted sharing of research results with everyone, everywhere, for the advancement and enjoyment of science and society.

On September 23rd, President Oden joined 56 other liberal arts college presidents in signing a letter in support of Federal Research Public Access Act (FRPAA) of 2009, which would require every federal agency with an annual extramural research budget exceeding $100 million to make the final manuscripts of journal articles written by researchers who are totally or partially funded by the agency publicly available online within six-months of its publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, on October 5th, the CSA passed a resolution in its support of this legislation.

For more information on FRPAA and the OA movement, and for a list of Open Access journals available through Bridge, the Library's online catalog, stop by the information table located in the lobby of the Library. See also the front page article in the October 23 edition of The Carletonian.
