Books and other printed materials that are fragile, rare, valuable, of unusual format, or otherwise in need of special care and protection are housed in Special Collections. These materials include examples of various periods and styles of printing, binding, and book illustration. The College maintains this collection, like all library materials, to support the curriculum.

- Artists' Books
This Collection features examples of artists' books from the past several decades.
- Bloch Western Americana
The Bloch Western Americana Collection focuses on the history and culture of the American West.
- Bruce Rogers
The Bruce Rogers Collection contains over two hundred of the nearly four hundred books designed by the prominent American typographer and book designer, Bruce Rogers (1870-1957).
- Facsimile Manuscripts and Maps
This collection gives Carleton students an opportunity to work with facsimiles of important manuscripts and maps from Europe, the New World, and the Middle East.
- Hemingway First Editions
A collection of first editions of nearly all of Ernest Hemingway's works.
- Highlights of European Civilization
The Highlights Collection publications contains important publications in the history of Western thought and civilization.
- McGregor
The McGregor Collection includes period-contemporary materials in the areas of discovery, the early settlement of North America, the American Revolution and the westward expansion.
- Polar Exploration
Carleton's polar exploration collection contains important editions of publications associated with the history of polar exploration.
- Private Press Specimens
The collection includes examples of the output of most significant American and British private presses operating during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Carleton's Rubaiyat Collection of over 300 items offers researchers an opportunity to investigate the publishing history and cultural significance of this work during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Sherwin Beach Press
The Sherwin Beach Press Collection features all of the work of the Sherwin Beach Press, a small fine press specializing in nonfiction prose.
- Student Made Books
The Student Made Book Collection includes books made as final projects by students in the College's history of print course.
