Past Activities: 2001-2002

Mellon Lifecycle activities are well underway at Carleton and Macalester. Below are a few examples of activities last year, to inspire you to consider ways this grant might help improve your life. You might also be interested in the activities from the 2002-2003 school year.

Department Ecology Grants

Some of our colleague are working on future visions and possibilities for their departments. In some cases, an outside consultant has been helpful and we can help you identify someone who would work well with your department.

Co-Mentoring and Cohorts

Carleton faculty have been incredibly creative in establishing a variety of co-mentoring relationships. Several cohort groups are also forming. Cohorts are groups with shared interests and/or concerns. Some recent activity: Carleton and Macalester department chairs met at the beginning of the academic year. A mid-career group has begin conversing about many aspects of their professional lives. Look for upcoming information on some later-career opportunities this spring. Faculty at Carleton and Macalester sharing and interest in European Studies are exploring possible areas of synergy. A co-mentoring venture has led to a Carleton and Macalester working group on the "Politics and Ethics of Comparison."

Faculty Exchange Program

Frank Morral is at Macalester this term, and a few colleagues from Macalester will join us at Carleton next year through the Faculty Exchange Program.

On The Horizon

On the horizon are plans to look at the perennial workload issue. We are also looking ahead to some summer workshop opportunities. The goal of the Lifecycles grant is to explore ways to enhance the quality of faculty lives. While the grant can't help with laundry, housekeeping, or stacks of grading, you may hve other creative ideas to improve (enrich, simplify, etc.) your life at Carleton.

Please let Susan Singer (x4191 or ssinger@carleton.edu) know if you have questions or proposals for using Mellon Lifecycles funds.
