On Student Culture and a Good Campus Climate

We have added a section to the LTC website for articles and other resources that are intended to be helpful to faculty as they try to maintain a good and inclusive class environment. I have always found the LTC to be an important forum for considering issues that affect our community, and I am glad that we had programming ready for these topics, both for lunch sessions as well as in our two most recent book groups.

The book groups filled in a very short time, and we were able to add a second group for one of the books.  That, along with the attendance at the lunches shows that we have some need to address these issues well in order to serve our students. At the student presentation, they made a case for faculty and staff training.  I have personally always felt some need for this, and that has increased as student culture seems to evolve quickly.

When we consider the various events that have taken place on campuses across the country, we can see a need to be responsive. I see it as a two-sided issue. I would welcome effective and thoughtful training for faculty and staff, but I would also like to see us develop a culture and a process that involves the students, so that we can respond to issues that come up in a constructive manner before resentment builds.
