This spring was great for observing. Astro 113 had several clear nights in which to take some beautiful CCD images. Here are some of the pictures taken by the twelve students in the class.
Galaxies
This is a lovely photo of the Sombrero Galaxy (M104) taken by Margaret Greenman ’01, Ming An ’01, and Tim O’Connell ’00.
Here is another view of M104 in color. This CCD image was exposed for 20 seconds and taken by Katie Devine ’01 and John Parejko ’01.
This image of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) was taken by Ira Nichols-Barrer ’03.
This lovely image of M101 was taken by Sarah Spotts ’01 and Julia Jarvis ’01. This was a 2 minute exposure, thus the dust lanes of this “face-on” galaxy are quite visible.
Nebulae
This is an image of M13, a globular cluster, which was taken by Sara Buechman ’03, Bethany Koehler ’02, and Renee Willette ’02.
Solar System
This is a lovely combined image of the full moon taken by John Parejko ’02 and Katie Devine ’02.
This image of a lunar crater was taken by Ming An ’01, Margaret Greenman ’01, and Tim O’Connell ’03.
