Ever wondered what's really happening behind the scenes in Carleton's energy, waste and food systems? How are those systems affected by the Climate Action Plan objectives and the goal of being a carbon neutral campus by 2050? What can you do to support campus sustainability initiatives and educate new students on existing programs and their effect on campus operations. How is sustainability integrated into student life and what can you do to be involved? These questions and more will be answered in this presentation and panel discussion with Carleton's sustainability assistants (STAs) and Manager of Campus Energy & Sustainability, Martha Larson.

Session 4: Staying Healthy as a Peer Leader: Session 1 of 2 Room: WCC 233 Presenter: Mary Reagan Harvey, SWA; Eric Leppink, SWA

This session demonstrates two SWA programs offered to students on campus. "Sexcapades" is a fun, Olympics-style way to learn about safe sex. Come have fun and learn new information to broaden your knowledge as a peer leader!(Session 1 and 2 are separate programs; you can attend one without attending the other.)

2:30pm – 3:20pm (Weitz Center)

Session 1: Suicide Prevention Room: WCC 230 Presenters: Jake Powell, RA

One suicide changes the lives of hundreds of people, and happens everyday. College suicide is a very real issue, and something Carleton has experienced. This is a preventable tragedy, and something that, as peer leaders, we should understand. This presentation will, hopefully, give you the tools you need to see when someone you know is struggling with depression or suicide, and teach you how to handle that challenging situation.

Session 2 The Fall and Rise of SUMO Room: WCC 231 Presenters: Janie Wong, SAPB

In the year 2010, SUMO lay on the brink of disaster. Attendance was poor and hipster movies were shown in Olin 149. The advent of the Weitz Cinema ushered in a new era of gloriousness and an alternative way of having fun on the weekends. Preview the tentative upcoming Fall term schedule for SUMO and, as peer leaders of the Carleton community, feel free to give feedback and suggest changes.

Session 3: Motivating Yourself and Others Room: WCC 233 Presenter: Yuvika Diwan, NSW Leader; Jonathan Lin, OIIL; Shavera Seneviratne, NSW Leader

As leaders, we expressed our enthusiasm and applied for peer leader positions on-campus. Now our original incentives combine with new ones to support us in our work. What compels you to lead and serve the community? If motivation wanes, don't just stand still. Tell us your story, because you'll love to hear it.

Session 4: Psychology of Leadership Room: WCC 235 Presenters: Benjamin Altshuler, RA

Everyone can call to mind the ideal leader, whether a fictional character bursting with charisma or the perfect boss they strive to emulate. Are these great leaders born with the skills required or do they seek out opportunities to change those around them? In this session we will grasp at the elusive qualities that define such excellent leadership and how we can live up to the ideals that guide us.

Session 5: Publicity, Recruitment, and Outreach Room: WCC 236 Presenters: Lindsay Guthrie, ACT

Worried about attendance at an event? Need to recruit people for a project or program? Review publicity, recruitment, and outreach at Carleton. Learn how to navigate publicity options on and around campus as well as gauge how much advertisement is necessary. Sometimes publicity isn't enough--don't undervalue personal connections! Develop and hone outreach techniques, including 1:1s and the elevator pitch.

Session 6: Campus Sustainability in Action Room: WCC 136 Presenter: Martha Larson (Manager of Campus Energy and Sustainability), Courtney Dufford (STA)

As members of a community in which sexual violence occurs, we may one day witness behavior that concerns us, or be approached by a friend that has experienced sexual assault. In this workshop, participants learn the "dos" and "don'ts" of supporting a survivor, and discuss different tactics for creating a safer environment.

Session 3: Peer Leaders as Teachers Room: WCC 235 Presenter: Susan Hoang, Reference & Instruction Librarian; Kristin Partlo, Reference & Instruction Librarian; Ann Zawistoski, Head of Reference & Instruction

As peer leaders, you are asked to think of yourselves as leaders or mentors on campus, but what about your role as educators? Carleton draws in students for its academic environment, particularly for the classroom experience. As students quickly learn, a residential liberal arts college is a learning community, where learning happens in all corners of the campus. Drawing upon our experience of librarians as educators, we will provide examples and discuss the learning that happens outside the classroom, and how we can all begin to think of ourselves as teachers.

Session 4: How to Get What You Want (Especially Funding at Carleton) Room: WCC 233 Presenters: Cooper Buss, SAPB
