President Poskanzer, Schiller Featured in Chronicle of Higher Ed

President Steven G. Poskanzer is the subject of a Chronicle of Higher Education feature on Nov. 28 about his interactions with students around the Carleton tradition of the bust of German poet Friedrich Schiller. The bust, which has been making appearances at important Carleton events for nearly 60 years and is guarded by a secret group of students, was given to the new Carleton president, and Poskanzer took a series of photos of him with Schiller that ran in the campus literary magazine The Carl and appeared on Carleton's Facebook page. "It was important for me, as a brand new president," he says of the shenanigans, "to show that I was an accessible, approachable person." The article talks about Poskanzer's goal of raising Carleton's national profile while learning about his new home, promising to play broomball and settling into the Minnesota scene.

Recently appointed the eleventh president of Carleton College, Steven G. Poskanzer, will deliver a special convocation at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, in the Skinner Memorial Chapel on the Carleton campus. Entitled “Setting Prairie Fires,” Poskanzer’s address will highlight the experiences that have led him to his current position, providing a unique perspective with which to serve as the new president of Carleton College. Poskanzer’s presentation is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception on the campus Bald Spot.

Carleton President Steven G. Poskanzer is quoted in the Aug. 10 edition of Inside Higher Ed in an article entitled "United Front." The piece covers a two-day conference co-sponsored by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) in which the group examined the relationship between the business leader and academic leader at colleges and universities. Poskanzer told the group he felt it very important that the two sides keep the difficult discussions private, making public a shared agenda. “These two individuals must present a united front to the rest of the world,” he said.

Carleton College Board of Trustees Names Steven G. Poskanzer Next President

The Carleton College Board of Trustees has named Steven G. Poskanzer, J.D., as its next President of the College. Currently the president at the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz, Poskanzer, 51, will assume his duties as Carleton’s 11th president on August 2, 2010. He replaces Robert A. Oden Jr., who announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2010, this past September.

I am pleased to announce an important new development at the College. Named in honor of Carleton’s second president, the William H. Sallmon Administration Building will respond to a critical present and future need, that of adequately housing the College’s expanding administration. We are immensely grateful for an anonymous gift, which has made it possible to begin the construction of this facility immediately.

While some few may regret the loss of the Bald Spot, current and future plans for administrative growth make it imperative that we utilize this central location.

Press Release: Carleton President Robert A. Oden Jr. Announces Retirement, Effective June 2010

Robert A. Oden Jr., 63, Carleton College president since 2002 and a leader of educational institutions for more than 20 years, has announced his retirement effective June 2010, the end of the current academic year. “I’ve personally informed all Carleton Trustees to tell them of my plan to retire at the conclusion of the current academic year,” Oden said. “My wife, Teresa, and I have devoted a great many hours to considering this decision over recent months and reached the conclusion that the time to retire is this coming June.
