Fencing Club

Club Officers 2009-2010

President Minty Kunkel
Treasurer Minty Kunkel
Safety Officer Minty Kunkel

About the Club

The Carleton fencing club works to accommodate both recreational and competitive fencers. Some of our members have competed in tournaments in the Twin Cities, St. Cloud and other Minnesotan locales, while others are content to learn and practice entirely within the Carleton Club. Competitions are usually one day events against other college clubs and often one or both of the fencing clubs from the Twin Cities.

The fencing club holds three hour-and-a-half practices each week. Practices tend to be loosely organized; after some initial warm-ups and drills as a group, fencers usually divide by weapon and there is a good mix of practice bouts and drills.

History of the Club

"I'm a 1979 alum of Carleton, returning for my 25th reunion last year. While I was at Carleton I was instrumental in getting the Fencing Club started, I believe in 1977. I was the club president for two years and a part-time instructor in the Physical Education Department. I'll look through my notes at home soon and try to find more concrete information for you. Fencing was one of the activities which fell by the way-side after Carleton as I pursued work and family. I picked it up again last year and it's good to
know that the skills are still there, though after 25 years some speed is gone.
Ah yes, maiden name at Carleton was Soderstrum. "
